Timely Discussion.
Leading iournals of the Atlantic
side are discussing the propriety
and impropriety ol the subscrip
tion started in New York city to
raise a fund of 250,000 for the
benefit of Mrs. Garfield and her
children. The Astoriax endorses
the belief that this movement is
not in good taste, and is setting a
bad example. We have as much
admiration for Mrs. Garfield as we
have for any other true and faith
ful American lady, wife and moth
er, but no more. There could be
no possible danger of her or her
children suffering, in the event of
the presidents death. .She has a
good and highly improved home
and farm at Mentor. Ohio, worth.
it is said, 25,000, and in case her
husband should die during his
term congress would be sure to
vole her at least a years salary.
Men do not generally give sums
of from one to five thousand dollar.-,
just for the love of giving.
And a l:trr majority of thoe
whose natne will grace litis sub
scription list will naturally expect
to be nearer the president, and'
have more influence, than ordinary
outsiders. Hut admitting that in
this instance none but the purest
and best motives have influenced
the promoters of and subscribers
to this fund, we still think it is in
bad taste, and will lead to results
that will be discreditable to 'is as
a nation. Future presidents will
expect their friends, soon after in
stallment into office, to begin to
circulate a subscription list for
their endowment, and men will
subscribe to it, and liberally, too,
for the increased influence they
will expect to have with the ad
ministration. And it will not be
long before the subscription busi
ness will be extended from the
president to members of the cabi
net, members of congress, gover
nors of states, etc. If the Presi
dent must be pensioned, let it be
done by the government.
An Apology Accpptt'd.
In the Brlglilon, ICiiglaiid, Mor
ale!, of June 18th, we fiml the fol

Telegraph, which we gracefully
and fraternally accept. When a
journal of such high standing as the
Herald apologizes for the foihlcs
of one such as the Telegraph, it
would he impolite in us not to ac
cept it. The Herald ays:

about as well informed on American
topics as the average British newspa

bread used in Chicago is poisonous."

somehow, Americans manage to sur
vive and keep the death rate of the
principal cities below that of London,
where the people all live on ambrosia

Fancy the Daily Telegram be
ing taken as misrepresenting Mr.
John Bull. The Asiokiax ought
to know that the Telegraph is one
of the few prints in England,
unfortunately their number is
growing; which are never read
without their information being
discounted a hundred per cent. If
one believes half what the Tele
graph says, the' give quite enough
evidence of child-like simplicity
that should ensure their being
"looked after."
Col. G. L. Gillespie will be as
signed to a place in the east on
account of the death of Gen.

An attempt is being made to
introduce English pheasants among
the Rocky mountains, and Lord
Morley has lately despatched a
number fine health' birds to a
friend who has settled in that re
gion. It is now suggested that
American turkeys could be intro
duced into England. The prairie
bird might also be acclimatized
there with advantage.
The only desire that actuated
Guiteau to assassinate the presi
dent was that he might become a
hero, and the sensational press of
the day are making him a lion by
quoting every act of his life. All
but one thing that the lousy scrub

the point of death in Portland,

An insect of some kind lias been
destroying wheat in Yamhill coun
ty at a fearful rate, cutting the
stalk off at the surface of the
ground. Some of the farmers
have lost very heavily on account
of it. Jos. Watt, of Amity, loses
about 200 acres of wheat, and
other farmers lose quite largely.
