Very Narrow Escape.
Mr. Andrew Schuring, -who picked
up the boat of Mr. Lewis, on Satur- j
day, saw Wm. Bakers boat disappear
twice in the breakers, and he feared
that Baker was lost. Once his boat
shot high and dry from the crest of a
breaker, but when it came down it lit
square upon tho keel. Baker aban
doned his net and pulled for No. 1
buoy, and afterwards returned through
the north channel and got it. Mr.
Schuring hung to his net. Baker was
farthest out to sea. When Schuring
came in he met three nets at the
whistling buoy going out at the north
channel. This side, at the second
striped buoy, he picked up Mr. Lewis
boat bottom up; hailed a boat near
by, got assistance, righted the capsized
boat, bailed her out, put his boat
puller into her and sailed into Bakers
bay, when the Canby towed her to
Astoria. The boat was turned over to
the claimants yesterday for the family
.of Mr. Lewis, the owner, who was
.drowned.

Fishermen Lost.
The biwit picked up by Andrew
Schuring, and artvoriieod yewterday,
belonged to Mr. Win. Lewis who was
fishing for Win. Hume Astoria can
nery. Mr. Schuring picked it up on
Saturday afternoon outside, and it
was identified yesterday by Mr. K. D.
Curtis, book-keeper at Win. Humes,
and to make assurance double sure,
Mr. Schuring had a IkkiI; which he
found in the boat, which proves to
have been Mr. Lewis account with the'
cannery. Mr. Lewis leaves a family
in this county. Ue was assisted by
Mr. V. R Finlcy; and both wore
splendid men. As soon as Mr. Schur
ing found that the boat belonged to a
man who had a family, he made no
furthor charge than the sum of $7 oO
which he had expended for help, tow
ing, and advertising, but surrendered
the boat he had risked his life and
worked from half-past throe till eight
v. i. in the effort to save. His act
deserves special montion.
