Recently Tirn Astokian re ferred hopefully to the increasing demands in China and Japan for productions of the Pacific coast as a stimulant to renewed efforts on the part of our producers. To our groat surprise the San Francisco Bulletin informs us that "we can not expect to make much headway in extending our trade with Hong kong. Tt is not the Chinese who are taking our Jlour at that point. "Were that the case the demand might be developed to an indefi nite degree, provided we could sell wheat cheaper than it could be raised in China. It is European population at Hongkong and in China (says the Bulletin man) that takes the bulk of the flour there, and the number is limited." This is very remarkable language for the Bulletin. It is absurd. What is the white or European popula tion in Hongkong or China that could consume even a single cargo of the flour that the Pacific coast ships to that country every year? According to the Bulletin, we shipped to Hrngkong in 1SS0, 234,332 barrels of flour. For sev eral years past the French.govern ment ordered from Saigon three times a year GGG barrels extra strong bakers flour. Formerly this was sent in barrels lined with paper, French style, but of late years quarter sacks have been sub stituted. With this exception, the bulk of our flour sent to Iloim- o kong is shipped by Chinese mer chants, and is by their own coun trymen consumed in the Celestial empire. "Only a small percentage of the flour exported to China con sists of extra. The vcrv fact that a large portion of the flour shipped to China consists of superfine, and that too of the very lowest grades, is conclusive evidence that the Chinese themselves are larjrelv substituting it for rice, and this is also the case in this country, the resident Chinese here censuming: considerable flour. This flour trade with Chin is steadily in creasing not a U'umcr leaves San Francisco for Hongkong that does not carry thousands of bar rels. The British steamship Na ples lately took a cargo f flour for that port, 1 lie freight of which was $S per ton. We do not see the policy of underrating our ex port trade with China, as is exhib ited of late years by a portion of the press of California, as well as by government ofiieials at Well ington. The Herald and Review says: i Of provisions pi oper, including canned meats, vegetables and fruit, but not sugar, the United States sent to Japan hiring the 3ear ending June 30, ISiK), in value 70,1S9, as compared with &40,G14 raised m Japan itself, 3S,000 imported lrom Great Britain, $7,000 from France and 2,000 from Germain'. By far the greater portion of butter used in Japan is brought from the United States. American merchants in Japan estimate that lulij- eighty per cent, of supplies of that kind come from the United States. An article of tinned butler prepared in Boston, is being introduced and pronounced excellent. Mr. Van Buren gives the following warn ing relative to canned goeds: 4Most of the tinned meats, vegetables and fruits used in Japan are from the United States, and while much of it is excellent, man' complaints have been made of receiving an inferior article. Nothing will prove more fatal to this particular trade in the east than in sending here any of these manufactures that are not of the best. The trade may be largely increased and good prices obtained; but if the com plaints I refer to are frequently repeated, the importation from the United States will largely cease, and the fact will have an evil effect upon other branches of our com merce in this country." Mr. Villard says that within two years the new company will have two thousand miles of railway in operation west of the Rocky mountains. This is an important announcement, if it is backed up by action. Its importance is all the 'greater when it is considered that as business makes business, so railroads make railroads. J2p"It you will send us five subscrib ers for one year with $10 00 advance payment, at the rale of Sa 00 for each name, we will send one copy of Thu A s toriax free, to any addrcSs you may give, and we will send an additional copy for each additional five names that you may send to us, with the cash in ad vance of course, for one year. THE HEWS. RT MAir. XSD TEfEGRATH Dean Stanley died at Westmin ster on the 10th. Lieut. Col. Nathaniel Michler died at Saratoga springs on Tues day. During the past three days Liverpool receipts of wheat were 238,000 centals, including 191, 000 American. Sitting Bull has surrendered. The Indians are almost starved and all are discouraged. Five chiefs and two hundred bucks, women and children are in the band. Commenting upon the prospects of the Willamet valley connec tion with Yaquina bay this year the Oregon Colonist says the road will afterwards cross the state to Boise city. A dispatch from Nauaimo this morning reports the Sitka mail steamer California in port with a burst cylinder and broken con nection rod. She will be worked down to Victoria with one engine. She did not reach Sitka. Wall street is depressed in con sequence -of trunk-line manipula tion. There is nothing in the gen eral condition of trade, industries or crops which bodes disaster, or which is discouraging, and the situation is more dependent on Vanderbilt than on anything else. A Washington correspondent interviewed the presidents nurse, who said the president remarked a few daTs after the shooting that if it was not for the pain in his feet he would not know what ailed him. He told the plrysicians, "I will stand all the pain but you must stand all the worry; I can't stand both," and since then he has stuck to the agrcoment. Something like a panic in Paris has been caused by the official an nouncement that in consequence of the phenomenally hot weather prevailing, the water supply is running short. At best of times it is utterly inadequate to meet the wants of the populace. The whole water supply of the city amounts to 3SO,000 cubic inches daily, and it will be probably six years before the existing state of tilings can be remedied. Pat. Garrett, the sheriff in pur suit of Billy the Kid, got his man at fort Sumner, 120 miles distant on Pocose river, at 1:30 last Sat urday morning. His first shot took effect in the Kids head. Had his first shot failed he would have been riddled with bullets, as the Kid is known to have been terri blv desperate and very accurate in aim when in close quarters. His death is hailed with great joy, as he had sworn to kill several promt nent citizens, and had already slaiu fifteen or eighteen men. NEW TO-DAY. OOUNI).
