The eventuality of war with
France is openly discussed in Mad
rid cafes and the coming election
are for the moment forgotten.
A posse of thirty men are in
pursuit uf the Rock Island train
robbers. Escape is impossible.
The notorious James brothers are
amongst the robbers.
Plans are bcin talked up of a
way to get the President to the
sea side. He will probably be
taken arcund to Long branch by
steamer, as the motion of a rail
way train would be hurtful.
It is rumored that the Central
Pacific railway will connect at
Granger with the Chicago, Bur
tington and Quincy. This will
make two through lines with the
Northern Pacific railroad to Ore
iron. A Guymas dispatch says that
the federal judge there has refused
permission to Sain Bran nan to
have his lands surveyed, and his
engineers have gone to the city of
Mexico. Braunati has appealed to
the federal government and will
soon return to San Francisco to
await developments.
The Episcopalians of .lobstown,
an ooscure village in Jersey, wnere
Lorillard keeps his horses, are
happy. He promised if he won
the Derby he would build a new
church for them, and they say he
always keeps his word. Iroquois
may be said then to have won a
big victory boih for religion and
Yankee horse flesh.
Lieut. Kay, of the United States
signal corps, sailed fromSn Fran
cisco on the ISth, with nine com
panions on the schooner (ioMenj
Fleece for point Barrow, Arctic
ocean, where he will establish a
station for meteorological observa
tion. Houses ready for erection,
instruments for olwcrvations, and
provisions for three years are com
prised in the outfit of the expedi
tion. A singular story comes from the
Lino islands in the south seas. A
Sandwich Islander, who hxd cm
braced Christianity, carried the
cross into one of the islands. He
founded a temporal kingdom, and
persuaded the natives to choose
the pleasant paths of peace, and
turn over to him their spears and
war clubs. The missionary ruler
soon proved to be exacting, but
when his subjects showed signs of
mutiiry, he gathered together a
select body guanl, made an on
slaught upon the defenseless inland
ers, and killed about a thousand of
them. He has been taken to Hon
olulu to be tried for his peculiar
method of spreading the gospel.
About 250,000 pounds of wool
will be shipped direct to the east from
southern Oregon.
Dr. D. S. Baker, of Walla-walla,
is about to build a large and costly
flouring mill in that city, or within
range of the. wheat fields.
Mrs.L.C. Severance of St. Johns,
has -sent to the Orcgrmian specimens
of four, five, mx and seven leaved
clover, which are quite a botanical
curiosity. They were all plucked from
a small sod not a foot square.
There are three cases of small
pox reported, and possibly more, in
Portland. The pnncrs up there make
no mention of this fact. When the
small-pox was in Astoria, Tun Asto
rian published full particulars. Thoro
is a ureat impropriety in suppressing
such information.
Capt. Blinn, of Olympia, is in
eastern Washington, where ho has
many and varied v:duablc interests,
land, stock, mines, etc. Capt. Blinn
believes that the region below the
Columbia rber and cast of the CaS'
cade mountains, is the best portion of
the whole grassy Lolt of America. It
is exceedingly fertile, and is almost
boundless.
Crops arc splendid everywhere
east of the mountains. A correspon
dent in Yakima inquires: But what
are we to do with the surplus, with o
railroad to carry it away? A sample
of wheat in our office from the farm of
Polly and Imbrie, is evidence of the
fact that people of that region ought
to have a railroad. Ana they will.
Capt. Kingsburys party of surveyors
are in there now loaning the line.
Once. located, it will soon bo built.
That is Mr. Yfllards way of doing
things.
