The President Assassinated.
The attempted assassination
o President Garfield, at a "Wash
ington depot yesterday morning,
recalls that most black and terri
ble day in our history, April 14th,
1SG5; when the beloved Lincoln
was stricken down b' the
hand of an assassin. The emo
tions of that day are too painful to
be recalled. The Nation had for
gotten the great sorrow in the
presence and fulfilment of new
duties, and the name of the
martyred Lincoln had but just
taken its place in hibtory and in
the popular heart, beside that of
"Washington, when we are called
upon to chronicle another an at
tempt at a similar horrible deed.
Circumstances arc difierenl now
from those of 1SC5, when the
Nation was just emerging from a
long and bloody war. The pres
ent is a period of peace and pros
perity, and there can be no hates,
nor disappointments, Mich as ex
isted at that time to prompt an
act so outrageous. This attempt
to take the life of the President,
fortunately for the rountry, can
not be traced to the filthy pool of
politics; is not the result of a war
amongst party leaders; nor in the
least connected with the fires of
part' strife. The primary con
sideration of the spoils of office
it may be, in part, prompted the
act, but let it be from whatever
motive, this assassin should be
used in such manner as to be
come an example to deterothers
from like actions. There is not
room in this most unfortunate
circumstance for an cherished
attack upon one side or the other
in politics.
The President .Sinking.
Our latest dispatch was from
AVashington, 2:40 v. m. yesterday;
which announced that the Presi
dent was sinking. His physican
thought he could not live more than
twelve hours. The Presidents
death to-day would cast such a
gloom over the country as to
wholly obliterate the effect of an
niversary festivities to-morrow.

Just as we go" to press with this
edition of Tin: Astoria x, a rumor
reaches us by telegraph that the
President is dead. We were un
able to obtain authentic informa
tion regarding the matter, but
presume that the rumor must be
founded upon fact.
Clinnzc Iu Sentiment.
"When the news reached the
sound that Mr. Villard and party
had gained control of the North
ern Pacific railroad,the people of
T&coma, as well us many others on
the sound, felt rather blue. Since
then, however, a bettor feeling
exists. The developments since
the transfer of control, indicates a
more hopeful future, and have in
spired more confidence in the sin
cerity of ihe Yillard party. Prop
erty owners in new Tacoma and
vicinity and at Seattle are unwil
ling to sell even at reasonable
prices. During the past week,
one person in new Tacoma refused
$10,000 for property 50 by 100 on
Pacific avenue. Atid refused
$5,000 for one lot. The railroad
company have a good many hands
cmplo3red and still advertise for
more. The' have aLo rebuilt the
entire wharf and in a few days
will finish replanking it. The
workshops are running at their
fullest capacity, employing every
capable mechanic who comes
along. A number of men are
employed in repairing the track;
the greater part of the road be
tween Tenino and new Tacoma,
will be renewed. Many thousands
of new ties, hewn in the woods,
are noticeable along the road.
The latest trick of the half-
breeds at Albany is a concerted
plan to smirch the character of Mr.
Piatt. The alleged witnesses are
all half-breeds. The report spread
like wild-fire. Prominent half
breeds themselves consider it un
true. Detectives arc there in the
pay of both factions and dog every
body at all hours. Their employ
ment has embittered the factions,
so agreement is apparently impos
sible. The bribery committee met to
consider their report, but reached
no conclusion. No senators are
yet elected to succeed Conkling
and Piatt,
Celebration Deferred.
In consequence of the- sad newB
from Washington, which has
plunged the Nation in grief, it has
been decided by the principal
officers of the day not to havo a
celebration in Astoria on the Fourth
of July. This paper was prepared
for the press before the rumors of
the Presidents death had reached
us, hence we hare not had time to
eliminate from our columns the
various notices relating to the pro
posed celebration. Out of res
pect for the dead President there
fore, there will be on celebration at
Astoria.

office for the mayoralty of Port
land, and served notice upon Mr.
Thompson.
Robertson says that the time for
his assuming the duties of the
collectorship will be controlled by
events in Albany.
While the press of the country are
talking about the enfranchisement
of women, they should say some
thine: about the disfranchisement of
a large class of men who make the
polls a common market for the
barter of their only commodity, a
vote.
Ex-Secretary Ramsay wha was
recently appointed to examine into
charges preferred against Superin
tendent Dodge of the San Fran
cisco mint, left Washington on the
1st en route for the Pacific coast.
He expects to reach San Francisco
about the 15th of July.
Secretary Hunt proposes to pre
sent to the next congress a report
on the pressing need of the navy
for proper vessels and for that pur
pose he appointed an advisory
board of officers to consult, recon
cile opinions and unite in recom
mending such as congress would
likely approve.
The first mine discovered iu the
Wood river region of Idaho was
in 18G-L The next locations wore
made in 1873. After the close of
the Bannock war, in 1870, a con
siderable number of prospectors
entered the region, and that win
ter some miners and one family
wintered there. In the spring of
18S0 a rush began, many locations
were made, settlements sprang up,
and about two hundred families
and a thousand single men spent
last winter there. This year the
rush has continued, and now there
are five hundred families and ten
thousand men in that region. The
movement in that direction con
tinues from all quarters. Tt is
claimed to be a very valuable and
extensive mineral belt.
