Mr. C. J. Smith, of Brookfield,
"got away" with that bear he has been
hunting. He killed it on the 27th.
It was a fine one; weighed about 400
pounds, and had been wounded by a
charge of buckshot about the head,
probably by Peter Lowtz, tw o miles
down the river from Brookfield.
Spokan Falls is just now cursed
with about as rough a crowd as has
been congregated in one place since
the early days of mining excitement.
The Dayton Chronicle says gamblers
and roughs of all kinds are flocking
there by every train. This is a sign

While the tug Sol Thomas was
towing the ship Kate Davenport into
port yesterday the tug Mary TaTlor
ran into the ship and carried away the
spanker beom. A block falling from
aloft struck Pilot Latham knocking
him senseless, and fracturing his col
lar bone. Dr. Baker is attending him.
He will be disabled for two or three
weeks.
