The Columbia arrived from New

We acknowledge call from Mr.

On Thursday one man returned

Chief Barry has dropped jon to the
schemes of sundry thieves who have
been prospecting this river for nets,
etc. He needs the support of every
honest, law abiding citizen.
The twenty-first annual fair of
the Oregon state agricultural society
commences June 29th, and closes July
Gtli. The board of managers will use
every effort to make' the occasion one
ofjnteresfc, and profit to all.
Miss Emma and Mr. Tuvy Arri
goni are among the passengers on the
Hay ward this inorning for Portland.
They will make an extensive visit
among friends there and pass the
glorious Fourth with old acquain
tances. Yesterday morning between one
and two o'clock tho slaughter house of
Bergman & Berry, situated near
Tongue-point, caught fire, burning
the roof of the shed of the boiler
house, and damaging the building to
the amount of over S300. It took the
united efforts of six or seven fisher
men to subdue the flames.
the market is linn at those figures.
This years yield of wheat in the Wil
lamet valley promisos to be the larg
est on record and other jwrtions of
the state give equally favorable re
ports. Reports from California are
also encouraging and indications now
point to a larger yield than was ex
pected a month ago.
It might have been predicted that
Talmage of Brooklyn would attack
the revised new testament, not so
much, doiihtl?, because he was not
selected a a iwiwr, a to the oppor
tunity the new version give to raise
an uproar. He triumphantly wants
to know why the rcriaere chaiwje a
mountain into ike mountain, a ship
into the ship, aud a good fight into
the good fight as if it wore not
reason enough that the original means
the, not a. He takes up passages
well known to be spurious, and aftor
pronouncing ihnni to be the word of
God, shriek: Hold on to your Bible!
The old Bible is good enough for me!
Yet Talmage may after all be of ser
vice, lie may disgust other leas
prompt demagogues, who had ex
pected to make capital out of the busi
ness, by talking of the good old new
teatamcnl on my toilet table, in my
family room, in my pulpit.
The damage done by fire in the
grain fields of California on the
22d, is variously estimated at from
30,000 to $-10,000. The losers
being renters, lose about all they
are worm. Atiouier large lire
started near Dry town on the 23d,
which spread rapidly. At one
time the town was in great dan
ger, but the fire was finally subdued.
A Fair Proposition.
From thi dale the Aoria photograph
gallery will conduct business on the
following plan. We will take negatives
of any lady and everybody that will

proof of the same free of charge, no one

from such negatives unlc they doire

Wc will take the Astoria engine com
panies and all lodge and societies, any
time they will assemble for the purjase,
and present each lodge or .society with
one picture of such group, either taken
all together or in .separate pictures and
grouped afterwards.
We will take views of residences and
buildings, hotels canneries, mills, etc.,
