Xclialem Lauds for Immigrants.
It is well worth while to draw
the attention of the incoming im
migrants to the inducements which
offer to the immigrant of moderate
means to settle in the Nehalem
valley. The lowei part of this
valley has very few settlers, Uut
there are good homes there to be
taken up, as government lands,
and lands that can be bought of
the railroad com pa 113 to supply
live hundred families. The lands
are exceedingly rich and although
mostly covered with timber and
brush are easily cleared. Hops
would be a very profitable crep to
raise there, as they will bear well
the cost of hauling out to Astoria.
All sorts of grain and roots excel
in this valley and can be used
with great profit in fattening beef
and hogs for the early spring mar
ket in Astoria, where they will
bring always a very high rate. It
should be borm in mind that in
order to make a success of the
settlement in the lower Nehalem,
settlers should band together in
suflicient number to maintain
their school, their blacksmith, and
their church, as well as to be
sufficiently strong to keep open
the road from the lower Xrhalem
to Astoria. If fort' families
should agree to settle in that
country as neighbors, they could
easily keep up a good wagon road
in their own settlement and to
Astoria. The price of government
lands is the same as in other un
settled portions of our county,
and railroad sections can be bought
at $2 50 per acre, the money to be
refunded if the railroad is not
built.

and about half the cabinet are at

leans on the 22d was the highest
known for eighty years.

ment of the Missouri river naviga
tion is in session in Council Bluffs
and very enthusiastic of good re
sults. IJartmann, the nihilist, tried to
go to America a low days ago,
but after taking passage discover
ed that the steamer went from
Antwerp, and was afraid to go
there, fearing1 arrest.
Parnell starts in July for an ex
tended political tour in the United
States. A deputation of Ulster
tenant farmers to-day had an inter
view with him and other home
rule members on the 22d,al which
it was agreed that home rulers
should strenuously oppose govern
ment amendments to the land bill.
The first new winter wheat from
the south arrived in New York on
Monday. The wheat was grown
in the vicinity of fort Worth,
Texas, and was from there shipped
to St. Louis, where its market
price was established at $1 :i5 per
bushel. The berries were small
and inferior to the poorest Oregon
wheat.
A Canadian paper, whose editor
probably believes that Friday is
an unlucky day, prints the follow
ing paragraph: "Are not such facts
as these enough to make one
ask: What's in a name? The
small excursion steamer that car
ried nine persons to their doom at
Gait three years ago was named
the Empress of India. The
excursion boat that went down in
the river Thames, at London,
England, in the fall of 1S78, with
about 000 souls on board, was
known as the Princess Alice.
The ship which foundered off
Spithead in 1872, and swept 000
passengers into the other world
was called the Royal George; and
last, but not least, the steamer
that parted on Tuesday evening
to carry desolation into thousands
of Canadian homes and drape our

of the sister boat, the Princess
Louise. Strange fatality." Strange
enough, certainly, to put serious
thoughts into one's head.
Xobody Hurt.
Sunday, the 20th, was when the
conjunction of the , planets oc
curred. Venus, Jupiter, Saturn
and Neptune were nearly in line
with the sun and moon, all attract
ing on one side of the earth. In
San Francisco it was one of the
clearest days they have observed
this summer. The wind blew a
brisk gale from the west, varying
in velocity from 21 to 20 miles an
hour, and the temperature, at one
o'clock p. m., was 5S Fahrenheit,
barometer 00.02 in. From hills
back of the Presidio, the Faral
lones, point Reyes, Mount Diablo,
and the Sierra range, beyond the
southern part of the bay, were
clearly seen with every indenta
tion and feature of their various
outlines sharply defined. At
Portland and Olympia, the wind
was south with light rain, and the
thermometer iG Fahrenheit. At
Salt Lake the wind was southeast,
and temperature S4, and at Chey
enne, northwest and 81 Fahren
heit. The air seemed very fresh,
pure ami invigorating, full of
ozone and other healthy and life
preserving qualities. Otherwise,
nothing unusual occurred.
A Somnambulists Walk.

The other evening as Officer
La very, of Waterford, was patrol
ling that village, his attention was
attracted by a flickering light that
came down one of the side streets
and proceeded up Broad street a
short distance toward the canal.
The officer hastened to the spot,
and was much surprised to see an
old citizen, clad only in his night
robe, with a lighted candle in his
hand, passing along the street
looking at the doors of houses as
though in search of some particu
lar locality. It was taining at the
time, and the drops of water falling
on the candle nearly quenched it.
Mr. Lavery accosted the man, but
receiving no response, and going
closer, saw he was walking in his
sleep. The officer aroused the
somnambulant pedestrian and es
corled him to his home.
Fires destroyed 7,550 acres of
wheat in the field in California on
the 22d, including many farm
houses, barns and much farming
machinery; loss not known.
The Michigan legislature has
passed a bill making it a crime
punishable by a fine of $1,000 and
a year in jail, to publish accounts
of rape, incest, murder, executions
or seductions, and the bill includes
even the sale, distribution or po
session 01 such newspaper ac
counts. A Dakota cotemporary
hastens to remark that: UA gang
of wolverine backwoodsmen will
not be able to muzzle the press of
Michigan for any length of time,
much less inaugurate a reform
which will affect the press of the
country at large.' If it be a re
form, why should it not be in
