Trout fishermen should regard it as a duty to kill every watersnake seen along the streams, for they are said to destroy more trout than all the rest of their enemies combined. Last Saturday evening, as Mr. Richard Welcome was riding on horse back down the roadway, just as he made the turn boyond Dcvlins can nerj' the horse shied at something, striking the rail, when Dick left the saddle quick, and took an involuntary plunge, followed by ihe animal which came tumbling after him. It hap pened to be high tide, and no injury resulted :iside from a splashing and thorough wotting of man, saddle and horse. Among the passengers leaving by steamer Oregon, is Mrs. Edward W. Serrel, of New York, returning from a winters sojourn with her daughter, Mrs. Lieut. Wainwright, at Walla walla. Venor has resigned as a weather prognosticator and started a mining exchange at Montreal. Can it be that the pay streak of his weather prevarications has pinched out, or have his labors been in vain? A man by the name of Thomas Cockcroft, fishing in Cooks No. 07, was drowned on Sunday. The re mains came ashore in the boat, near J. L. Stouts place, beyond Ilwaco, and were brought to Astoria, where the funeral will take place to-day, from the undertakers, Mr. B. B. i Franklins, at 2 o'clock r. m. The Astoria Juvenile Dramatic Association gave a charming enter tainment last cveuing at the popular Pioneer hotel, kept by Mrs. Arrigoni. The youngsters acquitted themselves very creditably, and Binders band rsndered sweet music generously. At the conclusion of the entertainment Mrs. Arrigoni prepared a splendid dinner for the little folk, which was Royally enjoyed. The steamer State of California steamed up to her berth in this city on Sunday, forty-seven hours and fifty minutes from San Francisco. An en tire new shaft has replaced the old one, broken on her unfortunate trip down. In order to get her ready in the shortest time, work progressed night and day after she went on the drydock. Tho cost of the new shaft is "somewhere in the neighborhood of $8,000, the News tells us, although we are told that $40,000 will not more than cover all expenses. Geo. W. Humes boat No. 40 cap sized Sunday evening abreast of Grays wharf without any apparent cause, there boing very little wind at the time. The occupants, John Sivan and Magnus Johansen, managed to right the boat. She was now full of water, gunnels under. Uanthoms boat No. 22, manned by James John sen and Joseph Bisk, seeing that they had capsized went to the rescue, took their boat in tow and lauded them at Kinneys cannery. Net and gear all saved. The Horald and Review of the 0th says: "Cannors hereabouts have a good salmon season, and are now busy with various kinds of fruits, with the promise of a large pan-k of all sorts and kinds. Sales arc roported of 3,000 cs 1-lb Sacramento river salmon at SI 121 1 doz; 5,000 cs Columbia river do at 1 20 y doz on the river, equal to $1 251 271 delivered hore; 800 cs 3 year old Columbia river, 2i-lb tinssold at $2 V doz.
