The steamer Oregon will sail for San Francisco to-day. The Tarn O'Shanter discharged her inward cargo at Geo. W. Humes dock. The schooner Argonaut arrived at San Francisco from Shoalwater bay on the 10th. The steaner Siate of California will be due this morning from San Francisco. Mr. J. 0. Fairfowl, of Portland, spent yesterday in Astoria. His first visit for two years. Two cases of measles in Mr. M. C. Crosbys family, and two in the family of Mrs. H. 11. Jackson. Dr. J. C. Orchard returned from Portland last evening, after an ab sence of nearly two months. The Mary E. kuss made her ap pearance at Kimppton again yester day, for another cargo of lumber. Coroner Franklin gave the re mains found 13T Mr. Gray decent burial yesterday, but recognition was impossible. Among the passengers leaving to day will be Carl Adler. who goes on business to San Francisco and for a visit to Santa Cruz. There is a Sessions and a Sisson in the Albany assembly. Our com positors mixed the names yesterday. It was Senator Sessions approached Assemblyman Sisson with a bribe to turn him from Conklingand Piatt. Thomas Plummcr, who was! drowned from one of Bergmans boats i on Friday, was a native of Belgium, aged 35 years. A. Clark, who was with him at the time thinks he could have been saved by one of Cooks boats. No. oO. Clark was.pickod up by Goo. Beale and Fred Howe. The Oregonian says: "Rescue Engine company No. 2, of Astoria, will visit Portland on the Fourth of July and participate in the parade. During their sojourn they will be the guest of Willamet Engine company No. 1. Rescue has a magnificent Silsby engine, one of the most hand some on the PaciGc coast." Mr. Hiram Gray reported the finding of the body of a man yester day morning about half a mile east of CoflinJoury slough, a mile below Lewis and Clarke, on the tide lands, in an advanced stage of decomposition. Beyond recognition. His shoes held on the fragments of a pair of heavy drab pantaloons. He was a tall man, perhaps six feet. No other clothing. Coroner Franklin was notified and held an inquest. The Pullman sleepers brought up on board the Tarn O'Shanter for the Oregon Railway and Navigation com pany are fine first class coaches. Bill Nye recently discribed a sleeper, and as they have more of "cm in Laramie than we have at Astoria, we appcndJ his remarks: "A sleeper is one who sleeps; a sfeeper is also a place where a sleeper can sleep; and a sleeper is, too, a thing over which runs the sleeper in which the sleeper sleeps; so that the sleeper in the sleeper "sleeps while the sleeper runs on, as well as sometimes leaps off, the track." On tho examination of Harry . Hendrickson and Bucca Porta, in the justices court, on Thursday last, the fact that Albert Cod3T, one of the wit nesses for the prosecution, was in the neighborhood where the crime was committed, at tho early hour of four or five o'clock in the morning, was commented upon by the defense in a manner rather derogatory to the char acter of the witness. The facts are that Albert Cody and Victor Pete were starting out fishing. Pete was in the boat, and Cody on Capt. Grays wliarf, when Cody witnessed tho rob bery, which he immediately communi cated to Pete, and shortly afterwards to an officer. Fourth of July. Messrs. C. S. Wright, A bell, L D. At the last meeting of the commit tee, hold at the council chamber Fri day evening, it was deemed host not to take airy definite steps until there could be a good attendance of the sub committccH, and until the finance committee could make a definite re port of the sums collected, and then the sums couid be appropriated for the use of such coinmittocs. With this understanding the meet ing adjourned for a rousing mooting Monday ovoning. Picked up Down tlio Coast. A correspondent writing from Suis law, infonns us that about the 20th tilt., a Columbia rivor fishing boat was picked up by H. II. Barret, who car ries the mail between Suislaw and Umpqua. The boat is described as a new one, twenty-four feet long, and is not damaged. It is painted a lead color, no name nor number, but has a deck pipe from the Oregon foundry, in place of a thwart. Jn front of the net room there is a bulkhead with two knees supporting it, and in front of the mast stop thorc is a chock, oak frame, spruce deck. The owner or owners of this boat will be furnished with the letter from which this infor mation is derived, upon application at Tm: Astokian uthce. Astorians appreciate Hi cream saloon. Tho Salem Stntosmnn of the Oth looks as fresh as a daisy. It had just washed its face. The t olographic news yesterday was a make-up of riots, suicides, mur der, political bribery, juggler', ru mors and contradictions.
