SUX DAY JUNE 12: 1S81
B.C. IRELAND
.Ed 1 1 or.
Hew. Where, Whcu.
Remarking upon tho dull times
at Astoria, the wide awake cor
respondent of the Oregonhm says:
Notwithstanding all of which,
we are endeavoring to be jolly
under creJitable circumstances,
patiently waitinu; for something to
turn up which will usher in the
good time coming, and therefore
shout with the sanguine and irre
pressible editor of Tin: Astokiax,
Vive la Villard, simply on general
principles, and without much in
quiry as to the appropriateness of
the exclamation, as applied to the
interests of Astorians.
If the Oregcnian correspondent,
or any other man; has a better
person for Astoria than Mr. Villard,
why just trot him out? The As
tokiiax considered the fitness of
the thine: when it exclaimed Vive la
Villard, but if anybody can do
better, let us know how, where,
when.
Diptheria is an epidemic in
Ludington, Michigan. One hund
red and twenty children have died
out of a population of 4,G00. The
.schools are closed and the police
guard houses where cases are
known to be, to prevent communi
cation. The Turk is beginning 10 sus
pect Italy" of designs on his do
minions, and fears thnt the Italians
may pursue the same course in
Tripoli as the French did in Tunis.
There was much marvebnir at
Italy's complacency over the oper
ations of France in Africa, but the
riddle seems to be clearing up.
As usual in European complica
tions it is a case of cobble.
Anxiety is the poison of human
life. 1 1 is the parent of many sins,
and of more miseries. In a world
where every thin"; is doubtful,
where you may be disappointed,
and be blessed in disappointment;
what means this restless stir and
commotion of mind? Can your
solicitude alter the ease or unravel
the intricacy of human events?
Can 3'our curiosity pierce through
the cloud which the Supreme be
ing hath made impenetrable to
mortal eye? To provide against
every important danger by the
employment of the most promising
means is the office of wisdom; but
at this point wislom stops.
The San Francisco Examiner
declares that the eastern press has
an exaggerated idea about the
cost of the residence of the rail
road men of San Francisco. As a
matter of fact, there is not a
single residence in San Francisco
that cost, ground and all, $1,000,
000 or one half of it. The most
costly one is that of Mrs. Mark
Hopkins, and that cost, furniture,
decorations and all, :i trifle more
than $400,000. Governor Stan
fords house, adjoining it, of which
so much has been said, cost less
than 250,000. Mr. Crockeis cost
$300,000 or thereabouts.
Physiologically, soup has great
value for those who hurry to and
from their meals, as it allows an
interval of comparative rest to the
fainting stomach before the more
substantial beef and mutton is at
tacked. Rest before solid food be
ing as important as rest after it. Let
a hungry and weary merchant or
professional begin boldly with roast
beef, and what is the result? The
defeat is often as sudden as was
the attack. "When the bod' is
weary, the stomach cannot stand
the shock of an ill masticated half
pound of beef. But if a small
plate of soup be taken, nourish
ment will soon be introduced, and
strength to receive more sub
stantial material will follow.
The Supreme-court of th&JJnit
ed Stales has decided that parties
btvying policies of insurance upon
the lives of individuals can only
claim the amount of money actu
ally due to them out of the policy.
Any excess collected from a, com
pany can be recovered in a court
of law by the heirs of the person
insured. This decision, recently
rendered, is a matter full of inter
est for parties who are in the spec
ulative life insurance business.
This little game, it would seem,
has its limitations as a matter of
profit. If the heirs of deceased
persons whose lives "have been
heavily insured, do not take ad
vantage of their opportunities the
are not the style of heir to which
lhe country is accustomed.
a woman and an umbrella is: that
there are times -when you can shut
an umbrella up.
A cheerful countenance is ncar-
ly as good for sin invalid as healthy
weather. To make a. sick man
think he is dyiug, all that is neces
sary is to look half dead j'ourself.
The heathen Chinee is learning
the adulterating practices of his
christian neighbor. It is reported
oo,uuu pounas 01 willow leaves
were recently collected at a single
port of China, to be mixed with
teas. Things are coming to a bad
pass when even the honest heathen
can't be trusted.
