Services of the M. E. church in
the Baptist church to-daj, at the usual
hours. Preaching in the morning by
the paster. In the evening Levi Le

Lodge i.o.u.t., will nrosont the
scriptural view of tomporanoe.
Business in the police way is very
quiet. Only one drunk was seen yes
terday on the streets, and he finally
"set down" on Borgmau & Berrysnow
lot, corner of Chenamus and Lafayette
streets, and looked so innocent that
the chief hadn't ihe heart to arrest'
him. He afterwards staggerod down
to the Astoria fisliery, xras next
ordered away, and finally went to
sleep on a pile of tin scraps, which
accounts for the scratches on his face
and nose and eyes.
Happy Jack, as he is known by
everybody, has turned up all right,
and got back to his rooms at Mr.
Dillons yesterday. His boat capsized
last Tuesdaj', but he and his assistant
got on to the botton of her and were
picked up by the Quickstep. Capt.
Turner sas that Happy .lack was not
wet until the seas washed over him,
and when picked up was singing "This
Wild Waste of Waters'" His assist
ant was somewhat frightened. Jack
only lost three fish by his mishap.
People should be very careful
about giving false reports of loss of
fishermen to press reporters. We have
needlessly caused anxiety abont Hap
py Jack by publishing the reports cir
culated by fishermen about him. We
"0ffor feci provoked to find a man
alive who has been reported drowned,
but there are sometimes provoking
incidents connected with sucli circum
stances, which cannot be explained.
TJien again, it shakes our confidence
in men.
Mr. N. M. Hanthome, of Boise
city, Idaho, is on a visit to his son
Mr. J. 0. Hanthorne, of Uppor As
toria. Mr. H. came to leprosont his
lodge m the Grand Lodge session of
Odd Fellows, and after the close of
his labors there, makes this additional
to his journey, and is enjoying the
pleasure of his visit very much. Mr.
Hanthorne is one of the leading men of
business in Idaho, as his son is bore ;
and has filled the position of auditor
in his county for the past eight years.
We are very much pleased to make
' his acquaintance.

A Chinese store on Chenamus
stroet has a heavy stock of fish, craw
fish, ducks, crows, oysters, bugs, etc.,
otc, put up in the Jlowery Kingdom
and iiMHtod to Oregon. In answor
to our interrogation tlie boss of ihe
shop said the Chinaman liked that
sort of grub belter than anything he
could get in Ameh'ca. Wc presume it
is upon the same principle as that
which prompted the man from Wyo
ming to ask ihe barkeeper at the
Fifth Avenue in New York for some
liker that 'd make him feel like kick
ing his grandmother. He xvanted to
feel at home once more. Woll, if xve
were in China, and that was the only
kind of grub ofi'ered to us, we -ehould
undoubtedly want something such as
we get in Astoria, to make us feol
like being at home. After all, this
squeamishnuss about diet is a good
deal owing to how and whore a man is
raised. The Chinaman perhaps has
as much right to be fastidious here as
an American xvould over there; and it
can no longer be doubted but that it
is a happy circumstance that all men
were not born Confuciuses, orMosoaes
in the bull rushes.
