Henri-burning' is a. feeble term for the state of anguish into which various strata of American snob ocracy finds itself plunged anent the fateful question of gloves or no gloves. Washington, where new notes cnetrte slowly, was astonished several times during the season just past by the incur sion of various travelled glasses of fashion and moulds of form who m made their entrance to the repub lican court ungloved. This was naturally an innovation that struck dismay into the well-drilled ranks of Capitolian society. The contest waged- violently for a time, but the ungloved invaders carried the day, and the glove is now solemn ly abolished from polite society. The fact illustrates the whimsical basis upon which conventionalisms rest. One day the Prince cf Wales, who is very stout and fat, and r whose hands are not oomfortable in gloves owing to a disagreeable tendency to moisture, drove off in a hurry to hold a levee for the queen. On arriving at the drawing-room he found himself glove less. It was too late to send, and, as it wouldn't have been etiquette for the rest to wear gloves when tho prince had none, the ceremony was a glovelcss one. Thenceforth gloves were banished from the great social ceremonials, and even in the street. The fashion has come to this country. During the last two years gentlemen have ap peared everywhere ungloved in the street, the drawing-room, the opera and the theatre. In France, however, it would be considered as improper to appear in a drawing room ungloved as unshod. JJut as the gloves are cheaper on the continent than in this country or England, the proprieties may be observed at a less cost. It is only about a hundred 'oars since governments began to go into the public loan business at all, in a deliberate, scientific way. The British national debt is not yet two hundred j-ears olcT, its bi centennial will be celebrated in 1SSS, but only by those who be lieve that a national debt is a na tional blessing. There has been a general and a very large increase in national debts, that of the JUni ted States having been increas ed by the civil war of 1SG1-65 from less than 100,000,000 to 2,227,000,000; but since the close of that great conflict it has been reduced to $1 ,SG,072,G93. Twen ty years ago Montana was in the heart of the Rocky mountains, and in the hands of Indians; to-day it presents many evidences of civil ization. Chottcau county, the county seat of which is Fort Benton, the head of navigation on the Missouri, offered 830,000 of its seven per cent, coupon bonds for sale in New York to enable Chot teau county to build a jail, and the lot was taken in one hour. The boat stoves made by 5L 0. Crosby, with fire-brick bottoms, are superior to all others in this market. Recent Decisions. t'oiiiitiou farrier. P:att Ivania railroad coHtpaity v. Mil ler, bnt. IX. Webster, Sui. IX, Kan sas. Where the parlies contract for the doing of certain work, and the work is done and accepted, and it appears that there was a mis understanding as to the price to be paid for it, the law rejects the understanding of each and awards reabonable compensation. The same rule obtains wliere an agent is cniploj'ed to contract for work, and in good faith and with reason able care and diligence makes the contract, although such reasonable compensation exceeds the sum which the agent was authorized to promise. rixtHro :i I'crsotuililT. Smith v. WasRtmer..Si. (X, Wiconeiu. Where a junior chattel mort gagee took possession of mortgaged fixtures and severed them from the real estate with which they were connected, to subject them to sale to satisfy his mortgage, held that he could not, as against a prior chattel mortgage, assert tlmr such fixtures were part of tlie realty. When all the parties have seen fit to treat what might otherwise be fixtures and part of the realty as personal property, the law will consider such fixtures, as between the parties, personal property to all intents and purposes. 3!:isfrr ami Srrtnuf. Baker v. Alleghany railroad coHijntny, Sap. C't., Pennsylvania. A master is not an insurer of tho absolute safety of tools fur nished to his workmen. He is bound to provide them with safe tools, but he does not engage that they will always continue in the same condition. Any defeat which may become apparent in their use it is the duty of the ser vant to observe and report to his master. But a master is bound to know that a rope used for the pur pose of loading heavy stones with the aid of a derrick will last only a limited time, and it is his duty to renew it at proper intervals. He can not furnish a sound rope and fold his arms until by actual breaking it is demonstrated to be insecure. Immoral Contract. Murray ctal. v. Wakefield. St. Louis Ct. of appeals. The plaintiffs were carrying on the business of the Missouri, state lottery, which was seriously inter fered with b the police commis sioners of the cfy- of St. LouiSj who caused the arrest of the vend ors of tickets. On defendants undertaking that he could and would control the commissioners and prevont such interferences, plaintiff paid him mone3' at differ- I ent times, which he sought to re- cover, defendant having tailed to perform his contract. Held that the courts will not aid to recover money paid in pursuance f Mich a contract. It is immaterial that the lottery was legal. Public of ficers must not be improperly acted upon, even for the doing of that which thev have a right to do. Sunday Scrap1;. Politeness is like great thoughts, it conies from the heart. He who is false to present dut breaks a thread in the loom, and will see the defect when the weav ing of a lifetime is unrolled. Our friends virtues reconcile us to their faults. What a delightful thing rest is: The bed has become a place of luxury to me, said Napoleon. I would not exchange it for all the thrones in the world. The tree of religion drops its leaves continually after they have done their work; and the tree itself grows greater and stronger by the help of each one of them.
