There is nobody in any community but could receive some benefit from his lectures. A good jail, where prisoners can be securely kept, is a want long felt at Astoria, says the Oregor.ian. Capt. Whitcomb. of the steamer Gen. Cauby, repox-ts that he towed the whale to the oil works yesterday. Ho also reports that the Columbia picked up a boat adrift on tho bar. Also that a boat camo ashore, bottom up on Sand-island. The men were picked up before the boat came ashore. Also reports that Happy Jacks boat which had capsized, was picked up by the Quickstep. Mr. O. P. Whitelaw, formerly an employe of Tuk Astobian, died in San Diego on Tuesday night. Mj! Oscar was a noblo young man, and will be greatly mourned by a large circle of acquaint ances here. He leaves a sister at fort Canby, Mrs. Lieut. S. R. Jones, and a sister in this city, Mrs. H. IT. "Willamet," tho Portland corres pondent of the San Francisco 3Icr aiaut, says: "The weather has not been storm', if we may except one night, when Cooks scow, moored near Sand island, was stranded. Had not all hands been asleep, that accident would have been avoided. The British ship Thurland Castle dragged anchor while off fort Stevens, and grounded. By lightering about 200 tons of flour she was got off without damage." All hands were not asleep, neither did the Thurland Castle drag her anchors. For the facts see As-TOBIAX.
