A limited amount of other freight will be taken at reduced rate3. The Ledger shtuld treat Mr. Villard fairly in its discussion of the "late unpleasantness" between the Northern Pacific railroad and tho Ore gon Railway and Navigation com pany. Mr. Yillard has not backed down; in fact has never taken any stand so unfair aB to require backing down. "Insurance, pilot-tax and towago are nominal in comparison with those of Oregons metropolis," says the hon orable United States railway commis sioner te tho people of Seattle. A comparison of insurance rates will re veal your error, Mr. French; and as to towage, etc., your statement is an old revamped slander of Astoria. Come up with the facts It is very easy to assert, but sometimes diffi cult to prove the assertion. The steamship California, from Alaska via Port Townsend, made a run of 2,594 miles in the round trip. She went 181 miles above Sitka to Tukon, the famous mining country, with a party or prospectors. They report the mines evidently rich, but the high price at which the present owners hold them was the cause of discourgement and they" returned. Capt. Carroll reports the water so low in the Stickeen river that parties are as yet unable to reach the Cassiar mines. Board of Delegates A. P D. The Olympia Courier says: "A mail agent named Skinner is getting smie left-handed compliments from the pirns up and down the Columbia river, on account of his incivility and self-imporlnnce. We hope they won't run him oil over this way to replace either of the agents on the Kalama Tacoma route, who are accommodat ing gentlemen." Our Pataha cotemporary, submit ting the marriage notice of Mr. Hope B. Ferguson, says: "Hope has struck it rich; got a jewel and no mistake." In a recent interview McGinnis, delegate from Montana, was told by Postmaster-General James, that he had no idea of depriving any honest community of its mail facilities, and he desired to seo even those regions where Micro was a deficit of money, feol that the post office department was not a respecter of persons. He said that honest bidding, honest con tractors and a pure service would assist the government to be generous toward the frontier people. The Walla-walla Watchman of the 20th says: "Last Friday morning a man brought a small load of nice, fresh silver salmon into town. There was a great rush and forwith the team was surrounded. In loss than ten minutes every fish was sold and many walked away with the money in their hands disappointed. Some felt so bad that they followed the team for several blocks, just to get a smell at the wagon." Charley, como down to Astoria and try some of the fish fresh from salt water. It makes all the dif ference in the world where you catch 'em. Delegate McGinnis from Montana believes that the Northern Pacific railroad will reach tho Yellowstone valley next fall, 400 miles west of Bismarck. Jay Goulds railroad will get to Butte city, seventy miles south of Helena, in Juno. Gould has made an agreement with Yillard to build an Oregon line from Granger, on the Union Pacific, to the Columbia. Vil lard is seeking to draw to his road both Goulds branch and the Southern Pacific interest. Both tho Yellow stone and Tongue river valleys, on the Northern Pacific, have magnificent prospocts. The Standard says that the new S3, 500 Methodist Episcopal church organ was secured principally by the ladies sewing society of the church, numbering not more than twenty or twenty-five activo members, consisting in part of Mrs. M. F. Mulkey, Mrs. George T. Myers, Mrs. J. F. Jones, Mrs. D. P. Thompson, Mrs. Dr. Wat kins, Mrs. E. J. Northrup, Mrs. J. H. Fansh, Mrs. A. C. Gibbs, Mrs. E. W. Connell and others. They worked unceasingly, got up concerts, gavo socials, inaugurated various ways for securing monpy and worked in the sewing circle and everywhere. By their exertions the church has an organ that is not only the prido of the ladies but a credit to the city. They deserve very great praise for their labors.
