The Selkirkshire was towed to sea by the Astoria, JMalciiIui pilot. The steamship Columbia crossed the bar seawards yesterday forenoon. -The pupils of Giace (Episcopal) church school expect to onjoy n picnic on Friday next. The Portland firemen have got horses for N. 1, and a row on hand about the American Exchange lire. The steamer California will sail for Puget-sound and Alaska ports Tuesday, May olst, at 3 a. at. Capt. Noyes has taken excellent care of the Besse and the large num ber on board, fumigating almost daily. The Mary Blindell arrived down yesterday in tow of the Ordway, Gil man pilot. She i3 loaded and ready for sea. It is said that Astoria has at least something in a commercial way which Portland does not care if wc keep the small-pox in quarantine. Trout fishing is so good in the yicinity of Asteria now that there is no occasion whatever to lie about it. It is certainly most extraordinary. The new government steamer Robert T. Lincoln is now here, and has been duly inspected and turned oyer to Lieut. Price, in charge of the bar survey. Mr. Martin Dillon claims that his team horses were foully placed, in quarantine by the pound master yes terday. "We hope the matter will be nvestigated. y It is claimed that the first water on the fire Saturday was from Capt. Flavels pump. Capt. J. G. HuBtler acted, as foreman, with Mr. C. S. Wright assistant. Mr. Wra. T. Everson, for a long time engineer at Willamets No. 1, in Portland, takes the position ef engi neer on the new government tug, Robert T. Lincoln. In consequence of the accident to the State of California, the Oregon did not sail from San Francisco for this port and Portland until yesterday, the Oregonian informs us. Complaints reach tho office of tho Mayor daily regarding tho roadway, which is dangerous, in very many places, from the city hall to the east ern limit of the town lino. Tho fire on the farm of J udge ; Callender last Friday makes the sec ond time his buildings have been thus destroyed. Ho will rebuild immedi ately. This firo will perhaps delay his journey to the springs. If the roadway is not repaired a serious accident is very liable to be reported; and if property hold ers have boen duly notified, and if they have property enough in sight, it may be confiscated to pay damages. Tillamook county is connected with Clatsop county by a resolution of the legislative assembly and a one horse trail. It is also connected with Yamhill county by judiciary law aud a wagon road, which is being improved by contributions from Portland. We are thus to be loft in tho cold, it seems. Capt. P. Johnson, who was pilot ing the Clan Grant to Portland at the time she grounded, informs us that he was running close alongside of deep water, when the ship tosk a sheer and stuck. The vossel has finally reached Portland but the ex pense waB heavy. A full examination of the matter will bo made. Judge Callender met with a se rious loss of buildings on his Clatsop farm, last Friday, the residence, milk house, tol house, wood house, etc., -were all swept away by fire. Tho loss is about 1,200 to $1,500 with no in surance. The fire is supposed to have originated from a stove pipe put through the kitchen roof. His tenant, Mr. Ellis, had barely time to save seme of his furniture. Small For. The Alden Besse, froraHongkong, arrived on Sunday, but was unable to pass quarantine in consequence of small-pox on board. The state health, officer took steps at once to relieve the sick and. distressed, and lias- establish ed a quarantine station on the hill just outside the city, and is endeavor ing to establish one ou the bay side of the peninsula where the sick and convalescent may be cared for. All the white persons on board, and part of the Chinese have been vacci nated, except those that lave been sick. Every precaution his been taken to prevent the spread, of the disease, which has been confined to but few on board, by the excellent J management and discipline enforced by Capt Noyes on the passage, and for the last thirty days, since when the disease made Us first appearance. As this is wholly the duty of the state health officer, as provided by legisla tive enuctmeiit. tin- city officials have no authority t take advance steps, i but the mayor aud committee on health and police heartily co-operate with the state health officer, Dr.Tuttle, in every way possible to preveut the disease from becoming epidemic. There are five Chstisar-, all convales cent, and three white men who have had il.e verihud, very light, and are now lecovering. There in one man only, Mr. Hardy, sccund officer, sick with small pox. Just a suuii as the J sick can bo moved to quarantine station 1 the ship will be thoroughly fumi- j gated. Mr. liafuy is isolated on ship board, ami his attendant fumigates and disinfects every time he visits him. The following card is issued by Dr. Tnttk- Quarantine. All persons are hereby notified that the American bark Alden Uense has been quarantined at the quarantine grounds, below Smiths point, and no one is permitted to visit or board said vessel without the permission of the health officer. Take notice lso that a quarantine station has been estab lished at the last house on the Smiths- point road, on the top of the hill, to the southwest of the city; this quar antine station is for the accommoda tion of those officers and white pas sengers of the Alden Besso who have not as yet shown any signs of infec tion, and who, it is hoped, will bo better secured against it. All persons are strictly forbid and prohibited from visiting or approaching nearer to said grounds than fifty yards to the wind ward side, except by special permit granted and signed by the health of ficer. Any one desiring to communi cate with those occupying tho station, can do so by application to' me in person. A red llag will be dUplayed at the station. Jay Tmnxn, M. D., Health officer of Astoria, Oregon. Astoria, Oregon, May 23, 1881. Mr. L. A. Loomis, Mr. Pomeroy, aud Mr. J. D. Holmau of llwaco, were in the city last evening. Frank Kcelar has given the pat- ronH of his auction an entire change of programme, and opened a sale last evening of elegant oil paintings in fine frames. The County-court has at last de termined to build a jail. The struc ture is to be completed on or before the first of October. Our reporter was not advised as to the character or size of building to bo erected. One of the finest ambulanco teams at fort Canb3r, a nice pair of mule3, backed off the dock at that post on Friday, and found a watery grave. The wagon was recovered. Who will say now that Friday is a lucky day for government mules. The Argonaut secured a copy of the Oregonian at Cathlainet yesterday and made a bee-line for Tue As toriax office with it, getting in about two hours ahead of tho Emma Hay ward. That's enterprise which we ad mire. Thank you, Yin. Mr. George Lohman, a fisherman on the river, but from what cannory we are not informed, caught a thresh er whale m his net yesterday morning and succeeded in capturing it and taking it ashore. The head produced four hundred gallons of oil. --A member of the Sacramento legislature who had introduced cloven bills and didn't get one of thorn passed, was gobig homo on the cars with a party of friends, when tho newsboy of the train threw a book in his lap. The legislator took it up and read tho title, A Fool's Errand, and turning to a companion asked, "How tho duce did that boy know I was a member of the legislature? Ho hit mo the first time." New Jersoy is the cem of tho ocean. Not only is tho statu out of debt, but it owns bonds, and draws revenue from one thine; mid another to such an amount that no state tax is required. The last legislature, feeling that the state treasury was in danger of being swamped by tho large amount of money constantly coming in, and nobody to keep it back with a broom, haB offered 5,000 to every town and city that will raise as much more, for instruction in industrial, mechanical and agricultural pursuits. With this munificent offer to agricultural socie ties, it would seem as though there hadn 't ought to be a boy in tho state, in five years, who would not know which horse to bet his money on at a fair. SSTSome saj- that it is no use for them to advertise, that they have been in the place in business all their lives, and .sverybody knows them. Such people seem to forget to take in consideration that our country is increasing in podu- lation nearly 40 per cent every ten years, ana no matter now om tne place may ue, there are constant changes taking place ; some move to other parts, and strangers fill their places. In this ago of the world, unless the name of a business firm is kept constantly before the public, some new firm may start un. and. by liberal advertising, in a very short time take the place of the older ones, and the latter rust out, as it were, and be forgot ten.
