The Sl.OOO .ith of July applana tion was vetoed by Mayor Thompson, of Portland. It was a violation of the charter. Nearly a fire at lvnapptoii yester day, by a flue in the house of Mr. A. Knapp, jr. Luckily discovered in time. Look to your Hues everybody. Capt. Eugene Brock goes to Port land to-day to take command of the new government steamer Robert T. Lincoln. The Lincoln will be used on the bar survey by Lieut. Price, in charge. An Illinois physician prescribed rest and quiet for an ill merchant, whereupon the afilicted man ordered the papers to discontinue his adver tisement. This brought him the need ed repose. Mr. and Mrs. John Douglass feel very grateful to all w ho aided them so much during the sickness and death of their little one, and extended to them so much heartfelt sympathy in the time of their bcreavment. Master Charley Bain is laid up from tho effects of a kick from a horse. .Mr. C. H. Bain is himself just able to get about from an attack of nervous neuralgia, and Johnny is sick with sore throat. Altogether it is quite an affliction. The Oregoniau calls for an in vestigation in the matter of the Clan Grant grounding. It says: "No ship ever got aground in that part of the river before; the channel is not less than lialf a mile wide and from twenty five to sixty feet deep, and it is diffi cult to see how a vessel in such a place can be run aground without the mo9t reprehensible carelessness." The Chicago Inter-Ocean of May 5th says: "A train of fifty cars loaded with oysters in barrels passed through the city yesterday en route to San Francisco. They are to be planted in tho bay near that city. They are being shipped thither by A. Booth, the great Chicago oyster man, who has extensive oyster beds near San Francisco, which he has cultivated very successfully for several years." Among the first matters received by mail here by Mr. A. Booth was a letter announcing that he had received at his Chicago house since his depart ure for Oregon, two silver medals and two diplomas from Berlin, the results of his exhibition there last year. The Chicago diploma says "silver medal for salmon." The Baltimore diploma says "honorable mention for salmon." This is very gratifying to Mr. Booth. Chief Engineer Berry has notified all persons in the city using tile flues, of the action of the council in this matter. The committee of the coun cil do not wish to oppress any person, but relying upon the side of safety and justice, hope and expect all will comply with the ordinances of the council as made and provided. Tho list of persons whom the Chief Engi neer has notified was placed in the hands of City Attorney Fulton yester dayT Hon. 0. P. Thorapkins, of Harris burg, one of our colleagues in the Chicago convention, Col. Cris Taylor, of Dayton, Messrs. D. P. Mason, of Albany, Seth L. Pope, of Portland, and J. O. Spencer, of Clifton, glad dened our sanctum last evening by their presence on a social visit. They come to get a sniff of the invigorating air at Astoria, and will go toJrnaco and Canby to-day. They attended Sts. Johns chapter R.'.A.M. last evening. The Missing Steamer. No word of the steamer State of California was received here tip to the time of going to press tvith the paper. Two steamers were sent out from San Francisco in search of her on the 18th. The Oregon left here twelve hours earlier thau she otherwise would have left, to see if she could render any aid, and tho revenue steamer Rush leaving to-day, will also make a sharp search. No apprehensions of danger beyond the delay are felt by any one. It is generally believed that the machinery is disabled, and that she is pushing elowlv ahead under canvass. Mrs. Gales sj'stom hi dress cut ting is lecommended by her class in Pomeroy, and tholadies of the class all signed their iiaiiiesjto the testimo nial. You cannot be buried in obscurity; you are exposed upon a graim tneairei tn tliR vnw of Uik nnrid. With biich contributors, and with its puzzles, sketches and humorous mat- j ter, Oolden Days cannot tail to mam- tain its position as the leading juvenile j journal of the country. --While at a picnic near Ashland, aj few davs since, Laura Modisette, aged about nine years, foot-lot; into the croek. fell from n No mid near at the time but Ola Lewis.a little girl about the same :wje, vho at once began feci earning for help, but as she saw her companion would drowu m the swift current unless assistance reached her quickly, boldly plunged into the Micam up to her. knees, and receued her little fnend. - On Sunday, May 8th, the City of Tokio, while being taken into San Francisco by pilot Thomas H. Barber, came so neai going on to the rocks at : point Diablo that the captain f the steamer folt the grating of the keel on them, and instantly taking charge f the vessel, backed her off in time to prevent her getting aground. The damage to the vessel was only nomi nal. The pilot refuses to make any statement legardiug the matter, bntit will be imestigated. The Illustrated Scientific News for May is looking handsomer, if pos sible, than any f the preceding issues. Since its change of publishers this magazine has improved with each suc ceeding number. The present issue is overflowing with handsome engrav ings and interesting and instructive mntior. Every number contains thirty two pages full of ongravings of novel ties in scienco and tho useful arts. Munn A; Co., T7 Park ivw, New York, publishers. We have been asked to define the new word jiiBt coined by the Califor nia assembly "slickens." The Chron icle says: "Tho slickens succeeded in defeating the oxpross commands of the constitution. The same slickens also succeeded in permanently fastening a tax yoke in the shape of the drainage act on the necks of tho people. The republicans were supposed to have a majority in the legislature, but a cor rupt half dozen sold out tho party for tho purpose of continuing an infa mous ring of tax-eaters in power." Colonel Waring's second paper on the sanitary condition of New York, will appear in the June number of Scribner. It is said that the author goes into every detail of tho subject, and grapples fearlessly with the most difficult parts of the problem. His recommendations, if carried out in their integrity, would, he believes, constitute " a complete remedy for all the remediable sanitary evils of the city of New York, so far as they relate to its soil, its streets, its houses, or its water supply. They involve nothing that is impracticable, of improbable value, of uncertain effect, or of undue cost." A fine lot of French candies just received at Adler's. P. Saturday evening will be the event of tho season at Liberty hall it being thtv appearance of the celebrated Hoo ley Quintin & Mortons Big 4 Minstrel company. Tho Post, of San Fran cisco says: "The minstrels kave taken like hot cakes, and tho critic who imagines that he can mold public opinion adversely to an entertainment when the aforesaid public wants to see a show, will find it harder work than domesticating an alligator, or making a ten-year old mulo affection ate.
