Confess the Fraud.
"We promised further develop
ments in salmon forgery and
counterfeiting business. The
steamer yesterday brought us full
particulars. The name of the
firm is J. K. Armsby & Co., 22 and
24 River street, Chicago. They
have been called to account for
the perpetrated fraud, and have
issued a circular letter to the trade
in an attempt to justify the act.
In this circular they make a very
feeble effort to throw the responsi
bility upon Mr. Geo. V. Hume.
Commenting upon the whole
transaction the Grocer of the 13th
says:
According to the ir code of mer
cantile honor, this act is justified
by the fact that the work was done
by a party who has committed the
error, if nothing worse, of identi
fying himself with a disreputable
mercantile transaction, the odium
of which the linn of Armsby &
Co., who were to recc-jive the bene
fit, now attempt to throw wholly
on him. Is it possible that
Armsby & Co. arc .so ignorant of
the quality of salmon that they
have accepted fish as first-class
which every reputable dealer who
examined it declared was poor, so
poor, in fact, that in order to ef
fect a sale $1 (XJ per dozen had to
be accepted? The facts about
this Puget-sound fish are known
to the entire trade, and although
it may be an undeserved compli
ment to Armsby fc Co. to admit
it, we believe that they were
known to them also.
"The Hail of the Pot."
If this were the first time that it
had been "definitely reported at
the headquarters ot the Northern
Pacific railroad Company at Ta
coma, that a pass across the Cas
cade mountains entiiely practicable
had been found; that the ap
proaches on either side are easy
and that construction of the road
and its maintaiuance will cost much
less than was anticipated," we
might chalk our cue for a rampse,
but it is too old. The Seattle Post
says:
Ye hear that Col. Smith, engi
neer of the Pacific division, has
officially reported facts to head
quarters which will undoubtedly
result in orders to commence con
struction by Green river pass
without delay. Mr. Anderson, the
cniet engineer oi tne company, is
expected to arrive this month and
will definitely fix the plans and
details of construction. The com
mencement of this loug delayed
work will institute an era of un
usual activity on Puget-sound,
from which Seattle will derive as
much benefit as any other locality.
The Baker city Reveille of the
11th says: uTiie Astoria n takes
the sensible view of the railroad
situation, and believes Mr. "VI Hard
to be working in the interests of
this country, and an honorable

without the announcement of the

accommodate the constantly in
creasing commerce between the
United States and Europe. There
are no less than twenty-fire lines
already established between New
York and the leading ports of
Great Britian and the continent,
and probably there are half as
many more between the various
ports of Europe and Boston,
Philadelphia, Baltimore and New
Orleans, to say nothing of the in
creasing fleet of transient freight

prove that the ocean carrying
trade is rapidly being transferred
from sail to steam.
A terrible disease has broken
out among the Chinamen employed
on the Canada Pacific railroad in
British Columbia. The case of a
Chinese cook at Big tunnel will
serve to illustrate the phase: He
sat down apparently perfectl
well, to eat his dinner. His feet
began to swell, and the swelling
extending itself up his legs and
body, reaching a vital part in
about ten minutes, causing his
abdomen and chest to expand in a
most unnatural manner, and he
tumbled down dead, all in less
than fifteen minutes from the time
the disease attacked him. In this
way these people are dying by
dozens, and already more than 100
have been carried off. "White
people are alarmed, and the gov
ernment has been asked to have
an investigation.
Gen Grant makes very few
speeches, but some how or another
whenever he opens his lips, words
of wisdom escape from his great
mind. A statement of his views
and objects in visiting Mexico
seems to have been regarded as
called for, and at a banquet in his
honor, at the Tivoli April 22d, he
set forth his purposes at length.
Following is the text of his speech
disavowing all schemes of connec cennec connec
teon: There is nothing in ray opinion,
to stand in the way of Mexican
progress and grandeur and wealth
but the people themselves. I do
not anticipate their opposition, but
fulby expect their active support.
1 think 1 can answer for nine
tenths of the people of my own
country when I say that we have
no sinister motives whatever;
we have no designs nor de
sires that are inimical to the
honor and credit of this great
republic. I am aware that some
of the papers of Mexico, as well as
possibly some of the United States,
have made allusions to the possi
bility of annexation of Mexican
territory to the United States. On
that subject I know that there are
no grounds whatever for apprehen
sion. When l was f resident ot
the United States, representatives
of the republic of Sau Domingo
applied to me for annexation, de
claring that such was the desire of
the government, and the wish of
all the people on the island. This
proposition came to me several
times before J considered it at all.
At length, fearing that what had
been said to me might be merely
the statements of designing men,
willing to sell their country for
private gain, I determined, quiet
ly and without the knowledge of
these agents of San Domingo, to
send thither agents of my owu to
discover the real feelings of her
people. By this means I verified
the statement that ninety-nine
hundredths of her people were
anxious for the proposed annex
ation. They were fully alive to
the subject, had thought over it,
and such a consummation was the
brightest of their dreams. They
desired as they expressed it, to be
come a part of our great republic.
I then entered into a treaty with
that country (which has all the ca
pacities of the best part of Mex
ico), and submitted it to the senate
of the United States for ratifica
tion. It. was with great difficulty,
notwitnstanoing my position as
head of the government, that 1
could get the question considered
at all by the senate, and when 1
did it was ueieateu by an over
whelming majority. 1 am sure
that even if it could be shown that
all the people of Mexico were in
favor of the annexation of a por
tion of their territory to the United
States it would still be rejected.
We want no more land. We do
want to improve what we have,
and we want to see our neighbors
improve and 'grow so strong that
the designs of any other country
could not endanger them. Mexico
has the elements of development
and wealth such as no other coun
try possesses at all events to so
high a degree. Her proximity to
the equator, with her elevated
plains, enables her to produce the
fruits of all latitudes. Her mines
are the richest in the world, and
she possesses every climate, from
the tropical to the frigid, in prox
imity to each other. With the
contemplated improvements in in
ternal communication she must ad
vance bej'ond the dream of her
most patriotic citizens. So far as
I am concerned, I shall be very
glad if I can contribute to this re
sult. I hope that we may be the
warmest of friends and that the
two republics may exist always.

if it takes all summer.
