Fv) 4- gfjxc jpJiiTrj glorias. ASTORIA-OREGON: WEDNESDAY- MAY 18, 18S1 .C. (KELIM). .Editor. Tlie CountciTcItprs Found. Ever since the discover' of the fraud upon Columbia river can nerymen, by the press of Cali fornia. Tin: Astokiax has been endeavering: to trace the matter to its source. We have ascertained that there were originally 8,000 cases of Mukilteo salmon sold; at least 3,000 cases not Columbia river, were disposed of before the 5,000 cases mentioned by the Grocer. The first let were shipped to Chicago direct and labelled there as Columbia river salmon. The. labels were printed in Chi cago. The next lot of 5,000 cases were purchased by the same firm, and the counterfeit labels wero put on in San Franceo. This is the lot the Grocer fell upon. We are glad to know that no person who is now or ever has been con nected with tli cunning of fish heie was interested in this foigery. We again beg pardon of Mr. Kob eit Wakson for even supposing him to be connected with any such scheme. The firm ' Watson & Co." is a myth; the ical operators are heavy Chicago dealers. Whether they can be punished under the law-, of ihi state, Cali fornia, or Illinois, tbry are never theless counterfeiters and forgers, in every seiw that the term can be applied. We have the name or the firm, but ie awaiting further development.". A dispatch from the city of Mexico on Saturday says: "The congress committee on public works has leported favorably on Gen. Grants railway contract." Letters lrom the People. "WatcMnir for a Body. Mt. Coffix, W. T., Slay 16. Tlie Ihrhl which commenced in Cliicago against the sUtlwart side of the republican party, finally culminated in driving Senators Conkling and Piatt to resignation of their positions in the senate of the United States on Moiday last. The New York Evening Express says: "It is said that when Blaine heard the news he was shocked into speechlessness and his face turned ashy pale. The bold man has been met by a bolder. It is a life and death wrestle between political gladiators. Conkling's splendid audacity, in refusing to be crushed inlhe coils of the ad ministration anaconda, leaping the arena and sei.ing fate by the fore , top, awakens admiration." The chief items of news in the Mexican papers refer to raihoads. Among the new roads asking for concessions, one of the most im portant is the Eagle pass and Topolorampo, which proposes to cut straight through the northern states, from esist to west, a dis tance of some 700 miles. It is a Boston and California affair, with Ben Butler, Judge Abbott, "Wen dell Philips and British gold at one end, and Paeheeo, of Cali fornia, at the other. It will prob ably go through, as Pacheco, who is on the ground working for it, is much liked on account of his Spanish blood. He is a broad- shouldered, deep-chested wost-ern-congressman-looking fellow, dressed iii black broadcloth and white shit t front. Our correspon dent guessed his aq-c at 38 until he commenced telling: his experi ences in the California legislature of thirtv years airo. The Mexicans are delighted at his being in eon gross, ucn. u rants scneme is backed by Limantone, a mani fold millionaire of the old fashioned usurer type and is said to discount pay-rolls at fifty per cent a month One day Grant took a free ride over the Moretos road, which is to be part of his railroad uystem. Those who think ''the old man" taciturn or stuck-up should have seen the unpretending manner in which he sat down with a group of Americans in the court of the hotel that evening and talked about his excursion. He sat there for nearly two hours, and did nearly all the talking and did it well. -Get your legal blanks at The Asiobian office. A full line of over two hundred styles. BUirr. HA.VKRL.Y.
