most enterprising citizens, invites the
Mayor, and the' Committee on Fire
and Water, to a personal inspection of
his patent flues m the Parker House.
Ail flues of that character may not be
as bad as the one just removed from.
Shustcrs building. The inspection
should be made, fair and wpiarc, and
the ilues should stand or fall by the
judgment of the committee. If thec
flues are considered safe, it will bo
nocessary to amend the ordinance of
the council, which is most assuredly
against them. We have no intorcstin
the matter further than what is
prompted by the principles of justice
and public safety.
As we sat resting upon the stone
steps of the magnificent Peabody in
stitute, intended for the poor but so
built and managed as to almost ex
clude them; facing the magnificent
Methodist church of Rev. Thomas
Guard, Washington monument tower
ing up at our left, we felt thirsty, and
asked our companion, Mr. Lucas,
where wc could procure a glass of
good drinking water. "Not a drop in
the citj'." Baltimore water carries
death with it. Pure water was not to
be had at any price. Wc had just
been listening to the revalation of its
immouse business, but that water
business stuck in our throat. In the
early day, when the site of the city of
Baltimore was purchased for ninety
hogsheads of tobacco, looking on the
rationale of quid pro quo, it cannot be
denied but that it was a vory good
show for a quid but now it looks bad
to see so much money squandered on
monuments, extra flue churches, libra
ries, etc., and not a spoonful of decent
water to moisten the quid that sustains
life.
