There would be no need of
steaming up and going fifteen miles to
see the condition of the bar if that
simple littlo register, operated here so
many years by Mr. Louis Wilson,
could be again placed in running or
der. The splendid totting gelding
Parrot, taken east by Mr. S. G. Reed,
was one of the handsomest buggy
horses in New York and passed every
thing on the road. A few days aftor
his arrival there he dropped dead in
the stable.
There has not been for years a
time upon Puget sound when men
Trere so generally engaged as at pres

- -XT fine large black bear, which has
been a troublesome enstomor to the

Astoria. The animal weighed 230
pounds dressed, on Warren & Eitons
scales.
The article which we give to-day
of a cargo of cotton lately landed at
New Orleans, will be interesting to
our river men. The arrangement for
consuming sparks on board Mississippi

should be applied to some of our
steamers.

The steamboat brand, a fraudu
lent transaction imposing upon the
good namo of the Columbia river
salmon; has caused some very harsh
things to be said by the press of this
state and California, in which The
Astorian was about as emphatic as
it ever gats to be. We inquired, upon
report, if it were possible that Bob
Watson was engaged in it and if so
commented a trifle rough. It is a
ploasiire to us to recall that harshness,
so far as we can; and state upon infor
mation, direct from him, that he is in
nocont, and that, to use his own words,
"none of his tribe has, or ever had
anything to do with any such damna
ble rascahtj'." Robert, give us your
hand; we 'ro glad to mako tho amende
honorable, and very much regret
having boiled over when tho fire of
rage was kindled within us.
