Is everybody in love with Uncle
Sam, not governments, but the
people are animated with a desire
to come over from the old world
and make homes in the new. The
fever for emigration is confined to
no particular nation. It pervades
everywhere abioud east, west,
north and south. Sweden and
Norway are two of the latest in
stances where the emigration
has broken out. A contract, it is
said, has been entered into for
carrying 00,000 Swedes and Nor
wegians to Huil, in England, from
which place they will be shipped
to this country and settle in the
northwest, where the climate is more
to their liking than the 'summer
temperature farther south. These
immigrants will prove a iirst-classs
acquisition. They are iiidustri-ouc,
frugal, intelligent, and are all
able to iead and write. We only

The schooner St. George was
lost on the 27th, by striking an
unknown sunken rock in the north
channel of Saint Paul harbor. The
vessel had a cargo of general mer
chandise and became waterlogged
in about ten minutes after striking.
The crew were saved by the
schooner Pauline Collins.
The mairiageof Ciown Prince
Rudolph of Austria, and Princess
Stephanie of Belgium, wjis most
imposingly stflemiijid at the
church of St.: Augniline in Vi
enna on the lj?th. An affect
ing incident occurred at the
most solemn portion of the cere
mony. The princess who had
maintained apparent composure up
to that moment, now broke com
pletely down and burst forth into
a fit of weeping, crying aloud and

nervous excitement. Prince Ru
dolph was calm and collected,
acted with uncommon good sense,
and succeeded finally in calming
the agitation of his bride. The
fears and timidity of Princess
Stephanie had a marked effect upon
the large attendance of royal and
noble ladies, and caused many of
thenj to shed teats.
Mrs. John Brown is not desti
tute, and does not Mek help; but
she is not unwilling to accept aid
from the people to clear olf a 1000
mortgage on her California faun.
Mrs. Brown, in talking of her lut

185G. I think it was, he made them
get down on their knees and pray
under penalty of being shot. I
feel that his character is becoming
better understood now."
H. M. McCaTtyj chief of the
construction on the Pen d'Oreille
division of the Northern Pacific
railroad, returned to Lewiston last
week on business connected with
the survey made by the govern
ment, in the vicinity of Pen
d'Oreille. He reports about 500
men employed on that portion of
the Northern Pacific railroad be
tween Spokane falls and the lake,
and that a good portion of them
were across the Idaho line. The
company want 1,000 more men,
but men are difficult of access for
the business. They have plenty
of teams but not sufficient men.
