is a place for all such persons; and the
sooner they arc cared for the better it
will be. This sort of thing is becom
ing monotonous, and arrests should be
promptly made to bring the thing to a
focus. We beg to refer the matter to
District Attorney Caples for attention.

in this part of the country. A man
who has no spirit of accommodation is
not fit for a public position.
The article which we give to-day
of a cargo of cotton lately landed at
New Orleans, will bo interesting to
our river men. The arrangement for
consuming sparks en board Mississippi
steamers was described in the Scien
tific American about a jear since. It
should be applied to some of our
steamers.
A new voice was added to the
choir of manufactory whistles at As
toria yesterday, that of the Astoria
iron works, which is fitted up in first
class style,and is nearly ready for busi
ness. The shops have been placed in
ship-shape by the superintendent,
Mr. John Fox, and what he don't
know about how io do it is not worth
knowing,
--After an interview with
Sprague about his land, Col. George
Huntor reports that his claims to
The ! lands situated at the mouth of the
Tukannon were amicably settled, and
the lands upon which Col. Hunter
filed years ago, were dcoded to him
by the company. This will be re
garded as but an act of justico. Tho
people of that section universally
speak favorably of the inanuor in
which the compairy complies with fil
ings or contracts, so far as the relate
to settlors claims.
