(11 gto $nilB v-5t0Klun. ASTORIA- OREGON THURSDAY. ..MAY 12. 1881 CIUBLt.NU... .Editor. The Narrow Gauge. Mr. Win. Reid who was a pas senger by the last steamer depart ing from Oregon; not for Scotland, as a cotemporary in Portland sug gests, but for San Francisco, pos siblv for Omaha. The exact nature of Mr. Reids business is of course not altogether a matter for the public, and yet it is. Rail roading is a. business which the whole public are interested to know as much about as possible. Some of Mr. Reids movements, at this particular junctuic of affair in Oregon, are watched with deep inteiest. AVe understand that the Oregonian railway company (limit ed) offer their plant for sale. That half a million more than it cost them lias been offered bv icsnon sible persoiib, but in consequence of their previous r.erjotiiitions with the Central Pacific lailroad com pany they fee! under obligation to Huntington & Co. to the evtent that they will not cloo out the plant to oiitcis until the (Vntral Pacific railroad folk aic satisfied v, take it or lox-ve it. Veiy likely they will leaw it. Thou it may paRfa into other hand- cnimkUv able to complete the system and extend it. If IIuntiiitou ic Co. take it they will complete the system and make the propo-Ml Xevada con nection. In either event, no mat ter who gets it, thevwill be forced to cany the rond beyond Pottland, but whether to St. Helen or to Astoria is not settled. The pies ent management will eairy the line into Portland just as soon as possible. The Oregonian infoims us that enough iron is afloat to com plete the road from Portland to the Yamhill river. The British ship Countess of Rothes sailed from Middleborough December 2Sth, with 1,200 tons of rails and materi al, the Countess of Derby sailed from the same port January 2oth, with 1,200 tons; and the Sidlaw January 12th, with S00 tons. All three vessels arc due and their arrival ma' be looked for at any day. About three weeks ago a contract was let by the company for building a bridge over the Yamhill at Lafayette, to cost f.20, 000. It will be 1G0 feet long and eightr feet above water level. As the smokestack of the largest boat traversing the upper Willamet is only fifty-two feet above water, the bridjre will not interfere with navigation. The structure will be done within a month. Barring unlooked for delays, the west side division will be extended to the Willamet river, opposite Rays landing, by June loth. Orrstiri and California Ballwaj-. By the terms of the plan of reorganizing the Oregon and Cali fornia railway, the new manage ment come into possession o the land grant between Astoria and the Y,7illamet valley. It seems to us that by this movement there is an absolute certainty that the Ore gon and California railway com pany will not longer risk delay in building the extension to Astoria from Hillsboro or Forest Grove In fact we have what is to us as surance that the work will soon be commenced here and pushed on to speedy completion. It is reasonable to suppose that this should be the case, because there are loud com plaints and vociferous demands that the grant be set aside, or that the road be built. On the score of paying, there is not a division of railroad on the Pacific coast anywhere that will pay better than this extension of the Oregon and California railway to Astoria. If I it is-not built soon the demands of people will be made so loud that the noise may be caught by the ear of a rival corporation which possibly might prove to be a pretty large sized thorn in the sides of the Oiegon and California railway company. YE ARE HERE A motion to quash the indict ment against Berry, Meaoham and Cline, accessories in the Jackson murder, was overruled by tho United States court in Colorado on the 9th. The Henry Buck still swings to her anchor in Victoria outer har bor. It was rumored on Tuesday that Mrs. Davis, the captains wife, had died. Tt is thought arranre ments will be made to have the Buck towed to Tort Townsend. The lack of quarantine facilities in the neighboi hoou of Victoria is shameful. At a meeting of the boaid of directors of the Oregon and Cali fornia railroad company, held on Monday last, Mi. Henry Villaid was elected president, vice Mr. It. Koehler, resigned. At the same meeting Messis. P. Schule and C. H. Lewis resigned their positions as directors, and Messis. C. E. Bretherton and II. J. Cunningham were elected to fill the vacancies. Mr. Koehler continues for the pres ent to act as manager. This may be called coming right down to the core, the inner most depth of the business. A Washington dispateh of the 9th says: "So many senators of both parties openly declare for Robert son that there is no room to doubt his confirmation, and warm friends of Conkling would have him re main silent and let the confirma tion come, unless Conkling should be attacked by the administration or its friends. In that event they advise Conkling to fight, as the burden of dissension and its con sequences would then be removed from his shoulders.1' -Warrant deeds, quit claim deeds and mortgages, for sale at this office.
