O wi,-f.jji w,,f fj,vt"Tf.ir,ii ASTnlUA.OKEGON: THURSDAY MAY 5. 1KSI t. C. IltELM CilUor. One Torch Less. San Francisco is evidontty in possession of one incendiary torch less. The Examiner states the case thus: "Among the many im provements set on foot during the past week, none convey so deep a lesson and augur so much for the iuture peace and prosperity of the city as the one commenced hy that prominent citizen, Denis Kearney. A short time ago Denis purchased a lot near the terminus of the Mar ket street railroad, and last week Denis gave the order, backed by cash, for the erection of n 3,500 house upon it. Denis also con tracted for the sinking of an artesian well, his last public pro test, as it were, against his pet animosity, the Spring Valley water company. To the general public it matters not from what source this poor mendicant, who a few short months ago passed around the hat for money to feed his starv ing family with, drew the money to pay for a SI ,000 lot and about 4,000 worth of improvements; the act is a guarantee that so far as Denis is concerned there will be no more July riots to depreciate the value of real estate and in crease the rate of fire insurance and taxation, and it requires no jjreat stretch of the imagination to fancy Denis sitting at the door of his own house with his ample brogans elevated on his own fence, denouncing the disturbing acts of agitators who, by their faithful fol lowing in his footsteps, are raising the rates." Southern California has this year entirely missed the early frost, and the fruit crop in that section is now safe. A strict application to business, of whatever nature, conducted on an honorable and solid business basis, merits, and is sure to receive, a sure and just reward. The Chinese of San Francisco have got away with the Hebrew cakers, and have been making and selling niatos bread to the chosen people. It is hard to sny what the Chinese can't do. It is nonsense for the piijRM-.s to say we are to have a war with Mexico based on railroad conces sions. The I anted States could not, with honor, make war on such a miserable, selfish pretext, and Mexico is not likely to provoke one. The D. S. Baker will soon be placed on the Lewiston - Celilo route under the command of Capt. Baughman. As soon as the rail road is completed to Taxsas ferry the Lewiston s'cameis will freight there; then northern Idaho will have three boats a week. The "Walla-walla Statesman inti mates that it is pretty generally understood that wherever Bishop Paddock makes his headquarters a fine large hospital and seminary will be built. It seems almost certain that the bishop will locate in Walla-walla, adding two more to the proportionately large num ber of public institutions. Bishop Paddock, financially speaking, comes in good circumstances, bet ter probably than most ministers who leave eastern homes for the Pacific. The Seattle Post, in dicussing the oyster trade of Puget-sound furnishes some interesting data. For instance: That 03'sters will yield at the rate of 4000 bushels per acre, and from two to four years is the time required for ma turing. j.n uystor uav, near Olympia, is a native bed of the bi valves of about eight acres in ex tent, and during the past three winters there have been shipped therefrom to Portland and San Francisco 00,000 sacks, of 100 pounds each, at prices ransrin from 2 25 to 3 50 per sack in the viast named market. Two years ago a company yfls organized New Tacoma, who built a boat and transplanted over 5000 bushels 03'sters in Gig harbor, about six miles from town. The oysters have prospered, are growing rap idly, and last season commenced breeding bv the millions. Next fall the company intend to plant a quantity of Chesapeake bay oys ters, which will doubtless grow and fatten in the waters of Puget-sound. ' Springtide Glory. San Jose Mercury. The glory of a genuine Califor nia springtide is upon us in all its marvelous, matchless splendor. The country never appeared more charming and inTiting than at present. The roads are every where reasonably excellent; and the mountain streams abound in speckled beauties, enticinjr the denizen of the noisy town to their cool and quiet retreats Now is the time for picnics, excursions, and the thousands and one devices for wooinjr over-worked and unrec reated mortality out among the flowers, birds and sunshine. And why not? One hour with Nature will oftentimes lift the soul nearer heaven than a whole year of ser mons. Minorities are often right, and majorities are often wrong. Three per cent, is the ruling rate of interest at Tombstone, Arizona. The associated press dispatches "lie by day, lie by night and lie for the Yerv lust of lvinor." The order of Odd Fellows is now the largest and most powerful sec ular societv in the world. The Missouri river has long held a morttraae on an ine jowianas from Omaha to Council Bluffs, and now seems inclined to foreclose. There is a bill before the legis lature of Belgium which, if adopt ed, will require every tobacco smoker to procure a license, the same as for carrvinir of arms. It is revenue that is wanted for the royal treasury. 1IKI Alfred Nelson, drowned in Gravs liav May :$d, 1881, age nine years. Brother or li. is. .Neibon.oi. Astoria. In Alameda. April JGth.
