A London firm has produced an ink which absolutely writes with ease and fluency on a glassy sur face, leaving the characters, etch ings, drawings or ornamentations lndelhble. The richest immigrants to this country are the Russian Menno nites. Twenty families of these people recently gave the treas urer of Castle garden fcto, uuu xo keep for them over night. The San Jose Mercury is severe when he says that "if Frank Pixley wasn't so everlastingly crotchety aud such and everlasting egotistic demagogue, and didn't 'slop over so perpetually, he would make a very good candidate for governor. He" wants it worse than a boy wants a jack-knife."" The agents of the underground railway company, in Brooklyn, are at work getting from the property owners along the line the right of way. The tunnel will be built from the Fulton fei ry and approach of the East river bridge to the city hall aud thence to the Long Island railway depot. Thegovcnior of Nebraska has ap pointed an Aibor Day, and invites all classes and professions to piarn, diligently on that day, and on every other favorable occasion during the early days of spring, forest, fruit and ornamental trees, vineyards, shrubs and flowors. This is a good example. Planttro.es. They'll be needed some day. The picture which fcome of our exchanges are publishing, and which looks like a road agent drawing his pop on a Dcadwood stao-e, turns out on closer exami nation to be St. Jacob trying to sell a bottle of Electric oil to a party of picnickers. Boomerang Bill makes this explanation, to quiet popular apprehension. The editor of the Wheeling Leader remarking upon the great changes -wrought by times says: "In the good Old Testament days it was considered a miracle for an ass to speak, and now nothing short of a miracle will keep one quiet." "We've noticed the same thing but it never occurred to us to call the matter to public at tention. The Sacramento Record-Uniou should be able to find better use for its columns than puffing Kear ney. Even the Call, iu its worst davs, never gave eight and a half columns of report and a long edi torial to this demagogue. No pa per has abused Kearney in more round and set terms, and now. be cause he favors the railroad, the organ wallows in the mire of adulation of the ignorant, bluster- j ing knave. A postmaster in Kentucky, be in"" in fear of removal, has written to the president: "1 want you to stand by me, Mr. President, be cause during the campaign I stood by vou. I subscribed thirty-five dollars toward defraying the ex penses of your election, the receipt for twenty-five dollars of which 1 enclose. I lost the receipt for the other ten dollars." PROVISIONS, The substitution of bags for barrels is the hubject of animated discussion in Minnesota. lite millers maintain that sacks are preferable and cheaper. Flour " barrels are worth forty five cents each, while a barrel of flour can be sacked for twenty cents great ly to the advantage of sacks. Ih exportation sacked flour gains more weight than barrelled flour. It is asserted that 600 barrels of flour put up in bags and shipped to Glasgow will gain in weight 1,800 pounds, and the value of the sacks will be as great, if not mutilated, ' as when first purchased. The ad y&ntage seems to rest with the sicks. MRS. H. A. DERBY, MASONIC HALL. - ASTORIA, OREGON. Will open her new stock On TtosMaj 5ft, 1881.
