FRIDAY APItIL 29, 18S1
9. C. I It CLAM) Editor.
Illustrated History or Oregon.
Some time since we called atten
tion to the above named publica
tion, and learn now that the work
is meeting with a very cordial sup
port in different sections of the
state and will be pushed to as
speedy a completion as is con
sistent with faithful work. We
had the pleasure of looking through
a complete publication of an east
ern work on the same plan as the
Oregon work will be finished, and
hence no Hesitation in sa3'ing that
it is as fine a specimen of book
making as we ever examined of its
kind. "We are also satisfied lrom
indorsements shown us, that the
work will be ably and honestly
written, and should be found in
the library of every citizen in Ore
gon. It cannot fail to be interest
ing and very useful. Mrs. Ford,
who comes well recommended, is
to solicit orders for the work in
Astoria. We have ordered a copy
and wish many in Astoria will
do the same. The work is to be
issued in parts and is cheap and
easily paid for on the plan the
publishers propose. Wo bespeak
for Mrs. Ford a cordial hearing
and liberal encouragement.
The Pacific Northwest.
The following extracts from the
supplementary report of the board
of Engineers for the Pacific coast
upon the selection of a site for a
harbor of refuge, will be read with
interest, as affording a good idea
of the business of the coast from
carefully digested statistics:
Trinidad, however, it is unjed,
should be selected because the
greatest number of vessels is en
gaged in the local coast trade south
of cape Mendocir.n, and between
it and San Francisco, and because
these are small and not fitted to
encounter storms at sea so well as
larger vessels, and therefore this
local traffic would be most bene
fitted by placing the harbor of
refuge at that port. The law
states the point to be selected
should be that which, in the judg
ment of the majority of the
board, is most suitable, ''the inter
ests of commerce, local and gener
al, being considered." This forbids
a selection based mainly on the
grounds "urged. The point is not
to be chosen chiefly for the bene
fit of the local coast trade part of
California, but the inteiests of
general commerce must also be
considered. Jf there be not now
any such considerable interests to
be subserved thereby, it is assumed
that there will be in the future,
and that the board must to the
best of its ability so judge of
what these may be hereafter as to
locate now the habor so as to
satisfy these interests then. The
selection is not to be made for the
present only, but for all time.
The wreck chart shows that 33
per cent, of the number of losses,
without reference to their magni
tude, during eighteen years were
between San Francisco and point
Reyes, about thirty miles to the
west and north of San Francisco,
and, so to speak, in the jaws of its
harbor; that 2S per cent, took place
between point Reyes and Orescent
city, north of lnnidad; the re
maining 39 per cent, occurred
farther up the coast. The 33 per
cent, lost off San Francisco has
no bearing on the location of the
harbor of refuge. But the table
mentioned gives most of the losses
below Mendocino city as happen
ing at anchorages.
We append to this report a
chart of the coastwise commerce
north of San Francisco, which
repiesents all the commerce that
can be thought to have any inter
est in this matter. This chart is a
graphic representation, in a form
easily grasped, of the relative com
merce of each point on the coast
for the year 187S. It will be ob
served that out of a total of 1,083,
362 tons, the Columbia river and
points north, mainly the strait of
Fuca, take 1,215,341 tons, nearty
three-fourths of the whole. Of the
remaining fourth, nearly one-half,
20S,972 tons, are employed on the
coast south of cape Mendocino.
There remains a tonnage of 258,
649, the sum of the traffic at all
other points on the north Pacific
coast. Of this latter sum, Hum
boldt bav has rather more than
one-half, and Coos bay not quite
one-third. I he changes that are
in progress to disturb these
ratios are a considerable relative
increase in the commerce of the
Columbia river and the straits of
Fuca. This fact is proved else
where in this report by statistics
From the testimony in the Chris
tiancy case, "vve are led to believe
that Giro, in an unguarded mo
ment, has sworn to the "widest
stretch of unsurvived, shameless
waste of lie that was ever piled
up in a court of justice to black
en the name of an innocent woman.
Oregon city has a bask novr.
The officers are: Major T. Char
man, president; L. Eastham, Geo.
Harding, and Mr. Cbarman are
directors.
An exchange, probably speaking
from experience, saying that it is
a question whether the damage
done to the human race by the
bad liquor imported from Europe
isn't greater than that done by the
pork exported from America.
The latter contains only worms,
but the former snakes.
Mr. O. A. Dodge, writing from
Spokan falls under date of the
lflth, says: "Business is getting
decidedly brisk here. The North
can Pacific railroad folks are rush
ing work in every department
between Ainsworth and Pen d'
Orille, and we hope to see an ex
cursion train of Astorians here to
celebrate 4th of .July with us."
