U gto & gstahm. ASTORIA. OREGON: TUESDAY APRIL "G, 1881 B. C. IBCLAM Editor. Our Railroads. The meeting of bond holders of the Oregon and California railroad company at Frankfort, Germany, on the lGth of May, is merely to confirm "what has already been ac complished, to wit: The sale of the Oregon and California railroad to the Oregon Railway and Navi gation company. As the Oregon and California railroad now em braces both the cast and west side railroads, this will place thern both under the management of the great and the liberal corporation which has just secured control of the Northern Pacific Railroad com pany, and has a through link in course of construction from Port land to New Yoik via Baker city and Granger, it is not at all difficult to foresee the result. Whether it will be to the advantsijrf or disadvantage of Walla-walla, The Dalles, Poit land, etc., etc., is not the all ira Dortant tome. But will it be to the advantage or disad vantage of this Great Pacific Northwest? "We are decidedly of opinion tnat tnat is wnat suouid most interest us. And we are as decided in the opinion that it will build up the whole. The Oregon Railway and Navigation company are not buildiwg cities, nor dabbling in real estate, nor manipulating political conventions, but they are proceeding, with wis dom, to the development of an empire here. They have not come among us to oppiess, but to relieve our wants. All they ask is fair play. They put their depots where the' will be the most useful, and they wili regu late triffs to correspond with the wants and requirements of busi ness. Some indignation has been expressed by some merchants over the fact that the rebates on freights is allowed by the company to two or three merchants in Portland and one in Walla-walla. There is, however, no discrimination in faror of particular persons or firms, but a general rule of the company allows of these rebates to houses that transport fifteen hundred tons or more per annum over the lines of the company. This i& a very proper concession m favor of large customers and of the same char acter as the concessions made by all merchants in the whole sale trade to large dealers. We will presume a point. Suppose three publishers enter the market the same day to purchase paper. One buys for cash ancT takes one hundred tons; the sucond buys for cash and takes ten tons; the third buys for cash and takes five or ten rheams. iso. one saves two to three cents a pound on his pur chase, and gets a discount of five per cent, for cash. No. two saves l2 cents per pound, and gets a discount. No. 3 pays the ruling rate, and it is optienal with regard to the discount. This very same system pervades all lines of business. How can the transporta tion companies be censured for fol lowing rules which govern trade of every kind? There will be an international monetary conference in Paris next summer. Marvsville, Tennessee, has a but ton factory, which is operatin quite extensively. An anti-monopoly league is be ing organized, with branches in all parts of the country. The compromise between Mr. Villard and Mr. Billings, rumor says, was proposed by Mr. Villard Florida orange groves are ad vancing in price some as much as hity per cent, within the past twelve months. Four persons, formerly domestic servants in the imperial palace, charged with the assassination' of the late sultan, Abdul Azez, have confessed that they suffocated him. It is rumored that the president has taken a firm stand in favor of an executive session and confirm ation of nominations. He has since Saturday sent for and spoken with eleven republican senators urging that it will relieve the ad ministration of embarrassment by confirming nominations. A caucus -will be held to-day. Stopped tho Paper. Recently we gave our views of the strife between Messrs. Billings and "Villard, advancing the idea that 3Ir. "Villards success would be much better for tho country than the success of his opponent A reader in Klickitat stops his Astoeiax because of his disagreement with our views. He says he went to Goldendale because he had hopes that "sooner or later" tho railroad would pass there and now he stops taking the only newspaper in Oregon that has ever advocated the building of such railway as he desires. Alas for the short sigh tedn ess of some men. Do you not know, sir; that a narrow gauge railway will "sooner or later" be built from Ainsworth through the only route available to the Colum bia river below Dalles city? probably before the locks arc finished at the Cascades? Can you not see that with out the Oregon business the Northern Pacific Railroad company, "nor any other man" or set of men, could make anything by railroading in eastern Washington territory? Do you realize that the Northern Pacific railroad company begins and ends no where? The Duluth terminus is block ed with ice and snow five months annually. Can you not see that with in three years Sir. Villard has advanced his line almost across the continent, and that any class of men who will blindly and madly oppose him are a big ger set of idiots and asses than Prof. Hornet found at the temperance lecture in Glocester. Wo don't beg for your patronage, sir; but pity your folly and j'our ignorance. Wake up, aud have some style about you; comb that hay-seed out of your hair and be a man.
