Tuesday next will be the C2d anni versary of Odd Fellowship in Ameri ca. The day will be suitably observed in Astoria, and Beaver lodge 2s o. 35, invite all members in good standing, all sojourning brothers, all wives and families of Odd Follows, to participate on this occasion. The programme in cludes a parade in regalia, speaking and music and other exercises at the hall at one o'clock r. M. sharp. At the close of the exercises at the hall a collection will be taken up for the benefit of the widows and orphans fund. BlXGHAMlTOX, April 21st About 7:30 this morning two ter rible and almost simultaneous explosions occurred from nitro glycerine in the nitric vaults of the Ditmar powder works in this city. About five minutes after ward 10,000 pounds of sporting powder in n storehouse about 100 feet from the nitric vaults ignited and caused another terrific explo sion. The buildings were demol ished and scattered in every direc tion and property destroyed for miles around, fences blown to splinters, trees uprooted, many buildinirs in the neighborhood bad ly shattered and windows three miles away blown out by the con cussion. The Oregonian describes the method of clearing out Oregon stumps in Clackamas: "On Saturday last F. W. Youmaus, in blasting stumps out of aj lot near his residence, put a heavy charge into a large slump some eight or ten rods from the house, and ex ploded it with telling effect. A section of the stump, nearly one-half, was blown out, and striking the end of his story and a half residence, mashed hole into it considerable larger than the stump; it then rebounded, striking a picket fence some three rods away and demolishing a section of it. Mr. Youman's family, a wife and two chil dren wore in the room near where tho stump struck, and although they were not hurt, they will hereafter go to the neighbors when a charge is dis charged.'" P. Hotel. - -The fossilized land office at Rose burg has at last secured aw order to move out of its old shell into a decent fire-proof building. Yerily, the world moves. Capt. Al. Harris of life saving station Ko. 3, was in the city yester day. The crew of tho station picked up a net on Thursday below Sand island. Capt. J. H. D. Graj' has pur chased 500 cords of wood on the sunny slope of the peninsula upon which Astoria is built. He will deliver it to others to order. Here is the way the Idaho Demo crat announces a business epening: "The Earrell boys will turn loose on the second story of Fred Dangle's brick on Monday." The Sitka steamer will proceed to Portland this morning. She discharg ed fifty tons of coal at Capt. navel's wharf yesterday afternoon, and one hundred tons at the buoy depot. A large number of ladies and gentlemen from Astoria, friends of Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Thomes, paid them a sociable visit Wednesday even ing, which was a complete surprise. Mr. Conn will probably open his new drug store next week, in the new building just erected by J. Vm. "Welch, on the corner of West Eighth and Water streets. The street has been widened to its full width, and presents a good appearance. Residents of Waldo hills s&3' that there is a wild dog in the hills which lives with coyotes. These latter ani mals only kill the lambs of shuep, but the dog 'generally cats off x haiu or shoulder. The dog has been seen several timos, and is supposed to be even more destructive than the coyotes. Capt. Alexander, of the Idaho, informs the Post, that on the morning of sailing out of San Francisco, ho was told by Mr. Jackson, thatthore would be one hundred emigrants ready to sail to Seattle on that afternoon or the day following. The Post wants to know who they are? Immigrants of course. More are coming. Purser Hughes of the Sitka steamer reports that they left San Juan island on the 20th. When with in forty miles of Capo Flattery a ter rible storm overtook thom, during which time they hd to throw over board GOO barrels of lime which caught fire. They crossed the bar at ten o'clock yesterday morning while it was blowing a regular gale with a very heavy bar. The Cnlifornia brings form Sitka ton Indian boys, on their way to Forest Grove t school, to be educated 03 Uncle Sam. It is said that the scene which presented itself on board J. W. & Y. Cooks mess-house scow, when sho broke from hor moorings Thursday at Sand island, wore almost indescriba ble. Everything breakable on board was broken by the wild pitches which the boat made, and the men fearing that they would go to sea were in a furious state of excitoment. It is said that it was one of the largest prayer meetings ever assembled on board of a scow in the Columbia river. There were between fifty aud sixty men on board at the time. Since the Chinese started to brew "choap San Francisco beer" thore is little or no demand for that article any more. Mr. John Rogers, of the Central Market, has made arrangements to keep all the finest fresh fish, etc, in their season. Max. Wagner's San Francisco National brewery beer can't be beat. Dr. John Welch, dentist, will be at the Occident hotel in this city about the 20th iust., and remain a short time for the practice of his pro fession.
