"STEAMBOATEU.''
Unscrupulous Practices in the Sal
mon Business.
HOW A JLOt'lL IMII'STUY SITI'KKS.
San FraucKi-o Grocer. April 15th.
With 'the recognized advantage
of local industries, and the almost
imperative demand for develop
ment in this direction, it would be
natural to suppose that capital and
enterprise thus directed would re
ceive the largest encouragement
and protection. Lack of appreci
ation of home productions, and
discrimination against them, in fa
vor of foreign goods, give rise to
frequent complaint. This applies
chiefly to such articles as come in
competition with similar foreign
products shipped to tins market.
AVith productions peculiar to this
coast, which are singularly exempt
from competition, either at home
or abroad, beyond that created by
producers themselves, there would
seem to be no occasion for any ob
stacle to the fullest development.
Prominent among these is
The .Salmon rarkinz luh:lr,y.
Rumors of irregularities in this
business, induced a representative
of the Grocer to interview a num-J
ber of leading men in this depart
ment of trade, and the facts de
veloped arc deserving of severe
criticism. It is well known that
the salmon business of the coast is
one of considerable importance;
that a large foreign trade has been
developed; that, as with all her
metically sealed goods, much value
is attached to the reputation of
brands. Columbia river salmon is
supposed to indicate the character
of the fish packed. Both at home
and abroad, this brand of fish,
coming from 3113 reputable packer
or dealer, has hitherto .been re
garded as a guarantee of the
excellence of the goods. The
brand Columbia river salmon was
used also to distinguish the pro
duct from that packed on the
Sacramento river, or in other parts
of the coast. Notwithstanding the
frequent assertion, that the fish
packed on the Sacramento river
are equal in quality to any, the
reputation of
The Columbia IJiwr I'isli
Has given the latter the preference
in foreign markets, and enabled
packers to secure the highest mar
ket price for these goods. The
Puget-sound fish are of a different
character wholly. The fish taken
early in the season, are generally
pale and lacking in oil which gives
flavor to the canned product, and
when packed in the fall, bear no
comparison with either the Colum
bia or Sacramento river fish. Well
informed parties in the trade even
claim that the fall catch of Puget
sound fish are unfit for food, and
refuse to handle them on that
account. While foreign markets
discriminate in favor of Columbia
river packing as against Sacra
ment fish, this is due chiefly to
sentiment. It may also be ac
counted for by the fact that some
parties have persisted in
iMckinz r.-tii risii.
Greatly to the detriment of the
Sacramento river salmon interest;
also that fresh fish transported to
this city, which suffer deterioration
by reason ol exposure and bad
handling while in transit, have
been packed and placed on the
market as representing the stand
ard of Sacramento river fish. It is
nevertheless true that the reputa
tion of the Sacramento river salmon
is growing better each year, and
reputable packers are willing to
place their goods on the market
r on merit, in competition with Co
lumbia river fish. To some extent
a difference in market value, how
ever, still exists. To illustrate, we
make the following relative quota
tions, assuming each quality to be
sound and well handled:
ruget-Sound, l-Ib cans, perdoz SI tfi
Sacramento, " " 1 l2Kti 20
Columbia, " " 1 io 1 25
These figures indicate the differ
ence 111 values in this market. It
is this difference probably, that
has led to the irregularities which
we propose to mention. During
the last two seasons, eastern buy
ers, presumably from
The Advantage la Price.
Have purchased freely of Sacra
mento river fish, under the condi
tion, however, that it is labelled Co
lumbia river salmon. Some of the
packers and dealers, under the
plea that it was no wrong, because
it was done with the full knowl
edge and under instructions of the
buyer, have given countenance to
this deception. During the pres
ent season this is said to have
been done at a large packing
establishment recently erected in
this city. This custom appears to
have been encouraged chiefly by
one prominent buyer for the Chi
cago market, and although no
wrong to him, personal!', it is
An InJiMire lo the r.-irlir
Through whom he distributes the
goods, and clearly so to the Co
lumbia river packers. From a
strict mercantile standpoint it is
also reprehensible. Thi opening
has already led to serious conse
quences. It appears to be no
secret that this sntne buyer .vho
inaugurated the custom of false
brands, has recently purchased in
this market between three and four
thousand cases of Mukiltco, Puget
sound fish, fall packed, pale color,
dry and poor, under the same con
ditions as to label, etc. That
these fish have been labelled here
fresh Columbia river salmon and
sent forward to be distributed
under that brand. Our represen
tative was shown both the fish and
label, the distinctive name given
being
Steamboat Hraml,
Watson & Co., agents. That a
party in this city who has for many
years been promptly identified
with the Columbia river salmon
interest is the agent through whom
this transaction was consumated is
also an open secret. This very
properly excites the indignation of
both packers and dealers, who
claim that it is eminently calcula
ted to bring disrepute on the en
tire salmon interest. Such practices
degrade the whole salmon business,
greatlv to the iniurv of honest
packers, and making legitimate
canning unprofitable, lend directly
to restrict, if not ruin, an impor
tant and growing Pacific coast in
dustry. The marvel is, that even
if unscrupulous buyers who seek
this market are willing lo prosti
tute the business to
This Cut Throat 1'oHry.
Any merchant identified with in
terests here, should be willing for
a temporary pecuniary gain, to
become the instrument, to carry
out such n oucstionable policy;
and particularly so when engaged
in the very business which is to
suffer therefrom. This disreputa
ble practice deserves the severest
condemnation. The remedy is in
warning buyers to discriminate
closely, and accept only such fish
as are put up by packers of estab
lished reputation, or guaranteed
by the agents who handle them.
Obstinacy v. Cheek.
Printers Register.
The lightning-rod man has cheek
infinite, as hath the Chicago drum
mer so hath the brindle mule;
but for cheek personified glori

editor, give us the patent medi

two-column advertisement, to run
twelve months, with half-column
local notices each week, and ten
copies of paper mailed regularly
each week to advertisers; and for
all this, saith the agent, I will pay
thee 15. in chips and whet-stones.
Now the agent hath contracted to
insert this advertisement in certain
papers, at any price; but he maketh,

Anton Bccht.
Vienna?
In lS49,one Anton Becht, until then
a grocer, at Vienna, and at that time
aged 1)2 years, of medium stature,
dark brown hair, ami proportionate
features, disappeared from Vienna,
Austria, having previously intimated
an intention of going to North Ameri
ca. In the meanwhile he has fallen
heir to an estate of no trifling amount,
which is being controlled by the
authorities. On January 11th, 1S52.
he wrote .1 letter from Spearsville,
Wells Township. Fulton county. Pen
sylvania, to his father and brother at
Vienna, addressed: "Johann Becht,
in Wien, N. Ulrich, am Platzl, No.
54, llandhmg zum Ma'rosen." The
following (translatinii) is quoted from
that letter: "On June 13, 1S50, I
arrived at New Orleans, having been
Go days on the sea; seven persons died
during the voyage. At New Orleans
I remained until December 14, wait
ing for Johann Buclifeltlf r, who, how
ever, did not come. I have already
traveled all over America, without
j finding any rest. Now, I am m east
in the fulness of his cheek, only
this liberal offer. Now the simple t.rn Pennsylvania, with a German
editor tlnnketh not of what the
agent may have contracted, but
groaueth in spirit, and saycth
fifteen dollars is better than noth
ing, and acccpteth the offer. But
the cunning editor is sharper, and
saycth '1 will wait and see," so he
fileth away the offered contract in
his waste basket, and answereth
not unto it. And before many
days the agent writeth the cunning
editor again, and saycth "behold!
I will give thee $25 00 for this
service." But still the c. e.
holdcth his peace. And again the
agent sendeth, and sayeth "I will
give thee even $35 00;" for he
must fulfil his agreement with his
advertiser. Now undcrstandeth
the cunning editor the agents little
game, and sitteth down quickly
and writeth unto the agent, "for
$150 00 cash, and no less, canst
thou have the service of thy serv
ants newspaper." But cheek re
gardeth not his communication,
and offered again 45 00, payable
in Illinois mud ink. Now after
many writings and much weariness
the agent reacheth 100 in his
ofl'ering. And the cunning editor
sayeth within himself, "it is
enough; it is list rates;" and ac
ccpteth quickly the contract
And he sayeth unto his friends, the
simple editor, and unto the pilgrim
drummer that tarryeth within his
gales: "behold how cunning hath
conquered cheek, and hath receiv
ed the reward of patient waiting!"
Behold! Juiikin, of Fairfield, hath
said it, and so it is!

friend except merciful God, in whom
I place my trust. 1 met two country
men, a Catholic clergyman, and an
other one from Guntlciulorf from
Bosol's house; I believe his name is
Baunian." Then follows a hearty
farewell to his father, with an aj
peal for forgiveness, and as an
ending to this letter, he indulges
in the exclamation, characteristic
to his excited, flighty conditien:
"Long live the republic." All infor
mation thus far elicited confirms the
fact, of the wayward character of the
individual in question. According to
this information, Becht, in 1S52, was
with one Jacob Clippingcr, and later
with James Doyles, both in Fulton
county, Pennsylvania. Further clues
to his whereabouts are unreliable,
some leading to Europe, whilst the
majority, and the most probable lead
to the battle fields of the late rebellion.
Endeavors to ascertain where and in
what regiment he enlisted have thus
far been unsuccessful. The missing
man represented himself as a baker
bv trade, and as having deserted from
the Austrian arm'. If still alive, ho
would now be sixty-four years of age
and the inheritance due him would
undoubtly prove a boon in his old age.
In case of his death, his next kin,
wife or children, if any exist, are en
titled to the inheritance. All human
itarians, officials and authorities, par
ticularly the press of the United
States and soldiers of the late war, are
earnestly requested to assist in ascer
taining the life or death of the said

The Count Chichon was the .Spanish

his wife, was prostrated by an intermit

the iim of the native remedy, the Peru
vian bark, or. as it was called in the
language of the country, "Quinquina."'
Grateful for her recoven. on her return
to Europe hi 1KH, she hitroilitcetl the
remedy in apain, where it was Known
under various names, until Limia'iis
called it Cinchona, in honor of the lady
who had brought them that which was
more precious than the gold of the Incas.
To this day. after a lapse of two hun
dred and fifty years, .science has given
us nothing to take its place. It cliectu
ally cures a morbid appetite for stimu
lants, by restoring the natural tone of
the stomach. It attacks excessive love
of liquor as it does a fever, and destroys
botli alike. The powerful tonic irtue
of the Cinchona is preserved in tlie
Peruvian Bitters, which are as effective
against malarial fever to-day as they
were in the dajs of the old .Spanish
Viceroys. We guarantee the ingredi
ents of these bitters to be absolutely
pure, and of the best known quality.
A trial will satisfy you that this is the
best bitter in the world. 'The proof of

New Naval Orders.
The new Secretary of the Navy,
Judge Hunt, lias long made a study of
naval architecture, timl is an enthus
iast on the subject of navigation. The
following rules, prepared by him long
before he thought of becoming the
ruler of the American navy, were pub
lished by a Buffalo paper, and are said
lo have been of great assistance to
ollieors in the discharge of their duties:
1. The custom of sailing before the
wind should be avoided, whenever it
is possible, as experience has demon
strated that it is much better to wait
for the breeze and carry it along, if
not too heavy.
2. Commanders of sailing ships-of-
war, I have observed, are addicted to
the practice of "staggering under all
they can carry." This matter will re
ceive early attention, as the necessity
for reform m this direction would seem
imperative.
. When dirty weather is threat
ened, or whon there is reason" to
suspect breakers ahead, the captain
should heave to, or tlrree, but never
more than four.
4. All "splicing" should be done by
the chaplain, as he is the person upon
whom the performance of that cere
mony most properly devolves.
5. When sailing in tropical seas the
breeches of the guns should be re
moved and carefully slowed away, to
be replaced when entering coldor lati
tudes and longitudes.
0. Should a seaman inadvertently
leave his watch below and fail to Gild
it on his return, the captain will pio
vide him with another from thp ship's
stores.
7. The practice of carrying logs
merely for the purpose of "heaving"
them, is of questionable propriety,
and will form a subject for future in
quiry. Premature Liohh or Hair
Nowadays may be entirely prevented
by the use of Burnett's Cocoaine. It
has been used in thousands of cases
where the hair was coming out iu hand
fuls, and has never failed to arrest its
decay: ii promotes a healthy and vigor
ous growtn, aim it is at the same tune
unrivalled as a soft and glossy dressing
for the hair.
Burnett's flavoring extracts are the
