The price paid, 1,200, is certainly very reasonable. The fishermen camped on Sand island were in luck on Easter Sunday. A case of thirty-six dozen fresh eggs were picked up by one of the men where it had washed ashore from some place unknown. There was not a spoiled egg 4n the lot. It was a most fortunate find. Mr. S. K. Stanley, of the popu lar Sea-Side house, was in the city yesterday preparing for spring busi ness. The Sea-Side has never been able to accommodate the demands made upon it for the summering season; but the seasons are so short that it will hardly justify additions. Mr. Stanley makes his patrons com fortable, however, when they come. "You" Bet," lot us hear from you again, and please sond us your post-office address. Some of the comic papers of the ceuntry have taken great pleasure it would seem, in caricaturing the great actress, Sarah Bernhardt. She has also been assailed by different journ als and presses. The success she has met with would seem to be sufficient proof of her abilities, and one of two things must be true: cither our best people must be easily gulled and im posed upon, or her enemies must have had little cause for the abuse they hare thrown at her. The Cows at Large. There lias been up to this date filed with the auditor and clork the de scription of tlrirty-sevon cows belong ing to different persons in the city, as provided for by ordinance 403. W"e are glad to see that the Ore gonian has, even at this late day; spoken out about the short comings of the Oregon state agricultural society in its lack of accommodation. It is simply a waste of time to read in the dispatches relating to tho dead-lock in the senate, the empty talk, the nonsense about Conkling and the president. When Mr. Conkling makes the spcoch mappod out for him by tho gossips, it will be time enough to comment upon the result. E. Squires, of Bcaverton, has in vented a novel device for holding the burrs (nuts) on to the axle-ends of vohiclos. Whoever lost a burr will be apt to regard this as beneficial. We recollect once when crossing the Blue mountains that the nut to the off fore- wheel was lost, and the whoel was just about to leave the spindle when it was discovered, and an accident averted. Search was instituted for the missing burr which could never be found, and the drivor sorely perplexed and aggravated, thought it "d d -dom where it could have gone to." He has since climbed the golden stairway, but if lie wore yet on earth, and the driver of a coach, he would biers the name of E. Squires. Domestic Exports. As the scow Jim was coming into port Monday morning the man at the anchor held on till he struck bottom. Some who witnessed the operation thought he did it purposely to inspect the anchorage, but such was not the case. In throwing the anchor over board, he thought it was going to foul with the cable, and hold on to it to prevent that, but the anchor having got the start took the man with it till it struck bottom, then he loosened his grip and came to the surface, spouting like a porpoise. In something written we have an indistinct recollection of having made reference to a general disposition among boys in their teens, as well as boys of maturcr years, to enlighten and bless the world with their pro found knowledge of the horse and his history. Our books and newspapers are full of this kind of litorature, and it varies in style from the production of the child at school, commencing with: The horse has four legs and a tail; up to the eloquent tribute of the scholar when he quotes from Jeb: That his neck is clothed with thunder and the glorv of his nostrils is torriblc. He snielleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains and the shouting. Between these two ex tremes of the child at his first school composition, and the professional literature, we have every grade of pre tention, and each professing to have mastered the whole subject. As we approach the close ofvthis nineteenth century, we begin to look for some thing better in this department of knowledge from those who assume to instruct. And it is to be found in Kondalls Treatise on tho horse, sent by mail to any person for twonty-fivc cents, postage paid. Apply to The Astoiuax office, or address D. C. Ire land, Astoria, Oregon. By a recent postal decision men can actually make money by getting their bills and statements of accounts printed.
