A Giant Monopoly.
Only a few months ago. Silver
ton, Marion county, was out of the
world upon its knees begging for
capitalists to come and build them
a railroad. -By perseverance the
railroad was speedily pushed on to
cbmpietion and Silverton made
happy. But u we may presume
to judge by the following para
graph from the Appeal, they begin
to regard it as a monopoly about
to grind them to impalpable fine
ness by its extortiens:
The traveler is charged seventy
five cents for riding on the nairow
gauge road from Silverton to
Woodburn, a distance of ten miles.
The company recently charged
$7 50 freight on three sewing
machines from Portland to this
place. These rates are largely in
excess of those charged by the
wide gauge, and eveiy able bodied
citizen along the lino ought to
kick against the extortion and
howl too, for that matter. AVe
hear of much complaint regarding
such outlandish charges, and the
company will lose by the opera
tion unless it comes down on its
tariff.

A correspondent of the London
Nature, writing- from Putney, says:
"Having occasion to go into my
garden about half-past ten o'clock
one night recently, 1 found there
was a tmcK wiuie log, inrougn
which, however, a star could be
seen here and there. 1 had an
ordinary bedroom candle-stick in
ray hand, with a candle lighted, in
order to find the object I wanted.
To my great surprise, 1 found that
the lighted candle projected a fan
tastic image of myself on the fog,
the shadow being about twelve
feet high, and of an oddly distorted
character, just as the Spectre of
the Brocked is said ro be. May
not the gigantic spirits of the
Ossianic heroes, whose form is com
posed of a mist, through which the
stars can be seen, be derived from
the fantastic images thrown upon
the mountain fogs fiom the camp
fires of the ancient Greek? In a
land where mists abound super
stitious people might very readily
come to consider a mocking cloud
spectre to be supernatural, though
it was really their own image
magnified.
The work for the pioposed
tunnel from Dover to Calais have
made such satisfactory progress
that its promotes? Colonel I3eau
,rnrat, R. E. and Captain English,
R. E., are now able to employ
three shifts of men constantly
throughout the twenty-four hours,
and are sanguine of being able to
bore about thiity feet per day
when all the machinery is perfect
ed. At present two drills worked
by engines driven by compressed
air are at work, and about thirty
laborers are employed. The bore
is seven feet in diameter, and the
soil chalk. It is so firm that the
engineers are of the opinion that
no brick or cement work will be
required to shore it up.
This country produces 450,000
watches in a jTear, and evidently
does not mean to be knocked out
of time.
The estimated value of the pro
duet of raisins in California during
the coming season is 150,000 to
$200,000.
During the winter 334 cars of
beef cattle have been shipped from
Reno to California. Estimating
the cattle to be worth thirty-two
dollars and fifty cents per head,
the sales aggregate $277,000.
The Yanderbilt Insurance com
pany is about to be started in New
Fork, with a capital of five mil
lions of dollars, .fay Gould will
soon have to turn his attention to
running insurance companies, that
he may find employment for some
of his surplus capital.
A firm at Dundee, Scotland,
contemplate establishing at Min
neapolis in the early future a large
manufactory for the purpose of
supplying the American market
burlaps and expoit bags. The
firm has ample capital, and are
now engaged in the same business
in Scotland. This is one of the
many straws that show the strength
of the current of flouf and grain
irts abroad.
The naughty Detroit Free Press
thinks Mr. Kirkwood doesn't know
whether the Poncas are an Indian
tribe or a minstrel troupe. They're
neither. They are land locators.
Senator David Davis in enthusi
astically mentioned by a Massa
chussets paper as being "as inde
pendent as a hog on ice." That
is to say, if he can't run he can
slide.
