OF LONDON.
The British and Colonial Printer
for March 10th, reproduces a por
trait of George Eliot, and also a
portrait of Thomas Carlyle. In
troducing that of George Eliot,
the Printer says: "Who has not
longed to see the face of the author
of Adam Bede and the Mill on the
Floss. Yet, George Eliot shrank
from gratifying this most laudable
curiosity. Into her reasons we
may not pry, but we hold it to be
akin to a duty that gifted and
famous persons should let their
nlivsinnrnninies be no less familiar
V"J
than their books and names. Only
one portrait of George Eliot was
ever painted, and that was years
no-rv nnd it has never been en-
o-raved; thence it comes that a
fugitive pen and ink sketch, taken
seven years since, is all that the
multitude of her disciples and ad
mirers possess in the way of por
traits. The reproduction we now
give conveys a correct impression
of the striking physiognomy of the
first of English writers of solid
fiction. Those massive features
fitly typify the powerful intellect
that animated them. In the su
perficial sense they are'what some
nnll nlnin decidedlv nlain. But
to those who gauge face-beautv ,y
a higher standard than that 01 doll
prettiness George Eliot's was a
countenance serenely grand in its
ragged contour. Power was the
chief quality it indicated, yet in
society few even among women
were so subdued in tone and sweet
spoken. She had the simplicity
that betokens supreme strength.
Slight though it is, this graphic
little sketch of the immortal
George Eliot is one of the most
precious of our souvenirs."
The Railroad to Astoria.
Oregonian, 18th: Olyinpia pa
pers say that Gen. Sprague has
received orders to begin at once
the extension of the Northern Pa
cific railroad from Kalama to Port
land. This statement may be
somewhat premature, yet there is
probability that such extension
will be undertaken during the com
ing summer. It is greatly to
be hoped that this connecting
link will be speedily establish
ed. Portland and all paits of
the country desire the closest
possible relations with each
other. Puget-sound and Portland
and in a lanrer sense Washington
and Oregon, will find great recip
rocal advantage in this connection.
This road will be another of the radii
of the general system whose de
velopment is rapidly advancing
this city to the rank of an impor
tant railroad center. A further
want is a railroad to Astoiia.
There is good reason lo believe
that construction of tins very im
portant line will soon also be

Celestial Asylum Busted.
New Northwest
Davies, the Walla-walla founder
of a "kingdom of heaven on earth,"
is beset by troubles similar to
those which annoy frauds and
swindlers of this sublunary globe.
There is serious dissension in his
spiritual realm. It probably had
its start in the death of
"Jesus Christ," one of his sons,
remarkable for nothing except the
glowing carnation of his hair.
The demise of the youthful
Exemplar raised doubts in the
minds of the colonists as to the
power of "Jehovah" and, his
heaven-appointed assistants to per
form miracles and defy dissolution.
These doubts developed into rank
infidelity, and the kingdom will
doubtless ere long peacefully disap
pear. Several members of the
flock have tired of heavenly life
and have brought suit in the
courts of this maundane sphere to
obtain an equitable division of
the elysian Paradise, and for a
restoration of terrestrial commodi
ties absorbed by their "Jehovah,"
and for compensation for years of
toil in their celestial asylum. They
will accept the coarse and vulgar
coin of either of the bi-metalic
standards of this earthly govern
ment in settlement of their claims.
