A storv which has obtained extensive circulation that the widow of John Brown of Harper's Ferry fame was last week a seeker for assis tance at the executive mansion, is to-day set at rest by the discovery that the Mrs. Brown in qirestion is the widow of John P. Brown, -who is not known to have been a martyr or anything else in particu lar except a government interpre ter in some western region not yet specified. Ordered An ay. The president is reported to be much annoyed by the presence in the city of a large number of federal officeholders, who are here to look after their own reappoint ments or help friends secure posi tions, and it is currently reported amonjr senators that he intends to issue an order directing all such officials who are absent without leave to return to their homes within a week under penalty of removal if they do not do so. frnre Ilcrllnrs. Ex-Senator Bruce, of Mississippi, was tendered the Brazillian mis sion and declined on the ground that the country is unhealthy, and that he would not take his family there, and also en the ground that in Brazil a colored man would not probably be well received. A medical com mission is now sitting to consider the expediency of covering the rubbish in the fortress with earth, ae there is no iiope of saving any livefe. and the disinterment of tlte dead might cause u epidemic. It is now believed that throughout the whole island, which contained 10,000 inhabitants, six .or seven thousand were killed, and twenty five ier- cent of the survivors wounded. The French, British, United Slates- and Austrian gun vessels in the harbor are doing all in tlteir power to assist the authori ties in the work of relief. Only ten of tin inhabitants of Cliesme were killed. But one man sur vives in Mines-, and 30,000 are without shelter. Latest Trout C'iilo. Ciuo, April 12th. A violent shock of enrthquake, lasting four seconds and increasing gradually in strength, passed over the island to-day, followed by falling houses on all sides. Constantinople., April 12th. Earthquake shocks of considerable violence continue in Ohio. Barely twenty houses remain habitable in the whole island. Forty-fire vil lages arc destroyed and the popu lation in many localities has abso lutely disappeared. Chio, April 12. 1 have now visited or obtained information irc garding nearly all villages in the southern half of the island, and T believe that the number killed in all the villages in question does not much exceed one thousand and perhaps less. Boston, April 12. The Ameri can board of foreign missions to day received a telegram from their missionary at Smyrna, relating the terrible disaster at Chio and ap pealing for aid for the sufferers. Fields' farm, about nine utiles above town. This afternoon a force of thirty fanners armed with rifles and slrotguns drove the flume builders off of Mr. Fields' place and tore down about 1000 fleet of the flume. The farmers had a surgeon with them. The flume builders had no arms and offered no resistance. Ko blood was sited, no angry words passed and no resistance was made. Each pnr3' left the ground in undimin ished numbers. Victoria Charter. Victoria, April 12. Dunsr.iuir & Biggie's tug Alexander, said to be the most powerful tug in Pacific waters, made a satisfactory trial trip to-day. The Bark Lizzie Tredalc and Signet sail for Port land to-day to load wheat for England. The Signet, a wood en vessel, gets 85s. The bark Odulia, now in port, has re fused 87s 6d, for a Portland charter. The city and wharves present an animated scene of activity remind ing one of the early gold days.
