I have secured an appropri ation for a survey for a canal for light draft vessels from Bakers bay to Grays harbor. 1 have also secured the examination or survey of Grays harbor and the surve' of the Chehalis river. As the survey of that river had been made several years ago I could not otherwise secure an appropriation to improve the same. Yours very truly, ' . Hip's. 11. jyiniXTs. i "Home airain and glad to get! liomc. We are rejoiced with i fhe sight once more of the blue Jiills and tranquil waterscopes sur rounding Astoria, while the moun tains are inviting, .somehow sug gesting the lines of our fri'nd Miles O'Riely to his cat, yet not at all appropriate, because it is not the "Oregon style," and there are signs on every hand indicating to its that this may be aptly describ ed as the dawning of a year of commercial convalescence, show ing the most . cheerful re turns of confidence and ac tivity in all channels of trade the many new buildings in pro cess of construction here, the heavy .freights of both steamers and sail ing vessels for Astoria prove that we are' soon to have 10,000, or 15,000, perhaps 30,000 to 50,000 permanent citizens at this modern Athens, and the query will be: "Where do the people come from? They are coming, all the same, by every mode of conveyance. We are happy in the fact that Astoria is our home, and we have no desire to again leave our sanc tum for a 3fcar at least far- ther than to visit the hospitable homes of men like Fanner Gray, and angle "an occasional day for the speckled beauties inhabiting xne iviasKam, loungs river, or Lewis and Clarke. So here goes for plain business, on the squarest basis that can be dealt out in As toria. Friends and patrons give us your $gT. No; but you certainly cannot do so if jou do not take them to water. It is doitr; something to do that. .2fWe are always ready to publish death notices, if the friends of the de ceased will send in the particulars, such as name date of death, age, etc This is, we think, as little as they can do. and as much as can be expected of us. Long obituary notices must be paid for. rLooc at it as you will, advertis ing carries with it a certain moral in fluence. Most people cannot resist the impression that a man who advertises a large slock- of fresh goods, is more likely to have them than one who does not do 0. Advertising has at least one good chance in its favor. .Why are advertisers able to sell at the lowest prices? Is it not because ihey obtain the Jargest custom, by the anost reasonable expenditure, and are Teally able to buy lower than their neich "bors.
