A very few fishing boats went out on Thursday night, and but a. few sal mon wure brought in yesterday morn ing. One boat caught as high as fifteen salmon and others caught none. John Rodgers, of the Central market, corralled about all the salmon that were caught by the fishermen on Thursday night, and it being Lent, he had no difficulty in disposing of them at ten cents a pound. Mr. H. B. Parker has eighteen men busily at work every day on his new steamboat and the work is being rapidly pushed. Caulkers have been engaged and will commence their part of the work on Tuesdaj next. Captain J. G. Hustler, who had one of his ribs fractured by a fail Cbout a week ago, was out yesterday but was unable to reach his office and had to return home. He has also been suffering severely from rheum atism. Amico Jaques, who was arrested by Chief Barry on the last trip of the Oregon for assaulting George Vanilla in August last, was tried befoic Justice Fox and bound over in the sum of 300 to await the action of the grand jury at the next term of the Circuit court. The last trip of the steamship Oregon is pronounced by officers and passengers to be one of, the pleasantest she has ever made. The weather was fine and the sea smooth beyond prece dent. It was well this was the case for she had the heaviest cargo the ever earned, and the unusually large number of 4G0 passengers. Mr. D. J. Ingalls of Lewis and Clarke was in the city yesterday. Dan is supervisor of road district num ber twelve and reports his experience in collecting taxes from Chinamen in that locality very discouraging. He first ordered them to work on the roads, but they refused to either work or pay. He then attached their goods and finally compelled the celestials to liquidate. There are some malicious scamps in Astoria who deserve to be dealt with according to law. Night before last some infamous wretch cut the rail of Mr. H. B. Parker's new steamer in such a manner that it will be nccossary to replace it by another. We hear of another instance where one placed his kmfe on one end of a net rack and followed along until the other end was reached, cutting the net in two. Such malevolent persons should be severely punished for their mischievous work. First Salmon of the Season. Mr. Wm. Hume, of Eagle Cliff, It wouM secin to tis that all our Co one K tlw pKMieer canneiymuu on the j luinbin tivur saimon canneyinen ought Columbia river, again makes the first , to combine in a prompt and energetic shipment of salmon packed on the j effort to inir a slop to the pernicious river. It will be retuetulwral that some time ago the Oregon Kilwy and ZavigatHHi contimiiy bought the stuum-j-hip Mississippi, and it was stated that she would be used in the Seattle coal trade. She will soon be on her way out, as hor detention whs occa sioned by the putting in of new boilers only. The Mississippi has quite a his tory. She was built in Dunbarton, Scotland, in 1SG3, for a blockade run ner xnd wns captured at sea by the United States gunboat Mayuolia. As x prize she was worth over 500,000. The navy yard purchased her after condemnation and fitted her out as a cutter, putting a battery of seven guns on her. She was one of the vessels upon which the confederate ironclads made a mid in J8G3. She was badly cut up in her spars and rigging. A shot from the Mississippi took effect on one of the pilot houses of an iron clad and wrecked it badly. She ren dered excellent service until the end of the rebellion, when she was Inid up in ordinary at .Now York, and on the 8th of June, ISG'.l, she wk sold at auction. She wa; altered, and for a time ran in he 2Jew Orleans trade, and lattorlvin the trade be tneen Bos ton and the Wuaiun it-imtuV She is 1,038 tons register, and has engines of 5U0 nominal horns powev. ai.d is withal, a very good and se.vicable vessel for the trade .she is to ik-employed in. She is a good cnnier and has excellent m"6-iiger acuottimudn lions. Mr. A. S:uuib has been appoint ed iu the police foico of this eiiy. The Beile of Oregon airived at New York from Hongkong on the 31st ult. " The State of California arrived at San Francisco on Thursday, forty-eight hours from Portland. Good time. Prof. J. P. Fea'ter's second term of writing school will commence next Monday evening at the Main street school house. Two vessels, under full sail, crossed the bar yesterday evening but was unable to reach this port, hence we could not obtain the names. Further particulars uf the body found near Eagle cliff have reached us. The man had on two pair over alls, two red flannel shirts and fifty five dollars' were found in his pockets. No papers were found by which he could be identified. He was five feet. eleven inches in hight. Theb.dy was conveyed to Cathlamet where a coron er's inquest was held arid a verdict of accidental drowning was rendered by the jury. He was buried at Cath lamet. The body was in a condition which indicated that he was one of the unfortunates from the Clatsop Chief disaster, and supposed to Iks xhe fire man. We are glad to learn that the lit tle daughter of Mr. Geo. Hill, who was run over by the truck on Wednes day last, is progressing finely under the skillful care of Dr. Severn. Her escape from instant death may be con sidered almost miraculous. In com. monting on this painful accident many have been inclined to censure the teamsters who allow the children to incur this dangerous risk by permit ting them to jump on the truck for a ride; but on inquiry we have ascer tained that the teamsters are not set much to blame as it would annearSl The rumbling noise made by the trucks as they pass over the planked streets renders it next to impossible for the drivers to h-tar the little noise the chi dren make in jumping on and off, and, besides, it is always necessary for them to keep a lookout ahead and not behind. Parents should strictly for bid their children from following this daugerous practice, and if they hear of their disobeying-their injunctions they should not be slow in punishing them for disobedience. Dr. Johu Welch, dentist, will be at the Occident hotel in this city about the 20th inst., and leaiMti a shuit time for the practice of his profession. Fraudulent Salmon Labels. some law under winch they can pro tect themselves, if not it is high time some such law was enacted. We were recently shown an illumi nated IsIh.4 on which was printed "Ficsh Columbia River Salmon. Co lumbia Packing company. A Lusk & Co., agents, San Francisco, California."' Trade mark, a Goddess of Freedom on a pedestal and the words "Colum bia brand." This label is printed by M. Schmidt and company, place of residonce not stated. We could nt ascertain that any company known as the "Columbia Packing company" was canning salmon on the Columbia rivor, unless it was the cannery at Fisherton. We there fore addressed a lottor of inquiry to James Laidlaw, esq., and his reply, which we take the liberty to publish, fully confirms our suspicions that the label in question is a fraudulent one. Mr. Laidlaw writes: Dear Sik: 1 am in receipt of your letter of 20th inst, and in reply beg to say that our trade mark is a "thistle" and the style of our company is "The Columbia Canning company." Cut ting and company pack at Eagle Cliff under the style "The Columbia River Packing company." I have by this mail received a copy of the label in question, from a correspondent in San Francisco who writes: "I inclose label of The Columbia Packing com pany, A. Lusk A; Co., of this place, which. is a fraud and in name rather cu.s yours." The probability is that the label is intended to be used upon salmon packed in San Francisco. If so, such fraud should be exposed and I am surprised a firm like Lusk & Co., would lend their names to such a pro cedure. I have seen another similar lahtl "Pioneer Fishery," Columbia River Fresh Salmon, Hughes & Co., agents, San Francisco; in fact 1 have a copy of this one also. While on thi subject I may mention -that our brand was pirated last year iu England uni salmon old as "Thistle Brand," packed by II. Hume & Co., Fisher ton, Washington territory, but I promptly discovered the printer, and tpped the sale of the labels. 1 am, Yours ven Truly, .Iamk Laidlaw. What can or should be done to put a stop to this unfair and injurious practice we are not prepared to say. We have done our duty in calling at tention to and exposing it, and it re mains for those who are more imme diately interested in putting a stop to it to take the proper steps to do it effectually if possible. James Petty was arrested yester day by Constable Henliue for assault He was tried before Justice Fox and fined five dollars, in default of pay ment of which he was committed to jail. The cow ordinance wi'l now be strictly enforced. All cows not com plying with the requirements of the ordinance will be taken in charge by the cow officer and if nut redeemed, after due notice, will be sold. - Mr. F. N. Shurtleff, collector of customs at Portland, has been official ly notified from Washington that the appropriations for light, fuel, water, etc, are insufficient to Ineet the cur rent expenses. Ho is authorized to incur no further expenditures after the 31st of March. Passengers from . Portland make the trip to Walla-walla in one day less than do the mails. The reason is that passengers go through straight by steam, and the mails are dragged around two hundred miles or more out of the way by stage horse power under the original contract. In the state circuit court at Hills boro Wednesday Henry Wintzinger ode, condemned for the murder of Jacob ZwangT, pleaded guilty to murder in the second degree, which was accepted b' the district attorney.
