Hume's new cannery, foot of Concomly street, has been raised, and will no doubt be rapidly pushed to completion. Rice grows well in eastern Wash ington. From the crop that is to be planted in Poiueroy this year, a good yield is expected next season. It will take considerable work to put the roads through eastern Oregon and "Washington in order. It will take more to put the roads leading out f Astoria is order. Messrs. Jewett & Kimball have added another splendid pair of horses to their trucking and draying business in this city. They are thoroughbreds from Clackamas county. Pesistent Pluvius, after allowing Old Sol one day's pleasure, opened his load-gates again yesterday, and the result was the beginning of our genuine March weather. Jiow spring begins. Last Tuesday as a gang of China "taen were thawing giant powder near the Grange city railroad cut, the powder exploded, blowing two China men to atoms and dangerously injuring two more. Seme of our exchanges have dis carded their patent outsides and at tempt t give their readers a paper printed entirely at home, but it is only necessary to read oae side to get all the matter contained in both sides. Gen. F. Wlieaton, present com mander of the department of the Columbia, and party consisting of Gen. Sawtelle, Major Kress and Lieutenant Landis, returned from their inspection tour to the forts yesterday. The firing of guns at fort Stevens yesterday was in honor of the arrival of the party at that post from fort Canby. A case of habeas corpus came before county judge, Hen. J . Q. A. Bowlby, on Tuesday last. Harry Ma.ce, under bends to answer to a charge of assault aad battery on A. J. Markey, who is still in the hospital suffering from the effect of his injuries, surrendered himself to Justice Fox demanding a return of the fifty dollars deposited as bail, and that he be com mitted to jail. The justice returned him his fifty dollars, committed him to the custody of the sheriff and in creased his bail to $100. Mace's attorney then produced a writ of habeas corpus on the grounds that a justice of the peace had no right in law to adjourn a criminal action pend ing before him for a longer time than six days. The writ was taken before Judge Bowlby whe decided to remand the prisoner back to jail to await his trial ou next Monday, the time to which the case was continued by Jutice Fx. ' Tin "Wedding. A vory pleasant party assembled on the evening of the 5th inst., at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Wcatherbec of Eureka, Washington territory, to. celebrate their tin wed ding. In addition to the residents of Euroka, many of their friends residing in the vicinity along the banks of the Columbia river graced the occasion with their presence, as asso did Mrs. J. F. Forchen, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Weatherbee, and other acquaintances of this city and upper Astoria. The fair hostess and surprised host proved themselves equal to the emergency by ploassntly entertaining their visitors, not only to choice refreshments, but with charades, parlor games, and other amusements which made it an evening :f dolight that will lung be remem bered with pleasure by the participants. The tin presents left by thoir friends as commemorative nf the tenth anni versary of the wedding, were numer ous and unique. The sad intelligence of the death of D. 31. Gault is noted. He died at Pendleton Thursday morning. --Hugh Conley fell from a wagoa and was dragged by a runaway team and killed near Brooklyn mills, East Portland, on Thursday last, The Brosklyn flouring mill, lo cated in East Portland, caught, or was set on fire at an early hour Thursday morning, and together with the con tents was totally destroyed. The sociable given by the young Misses at the Young Men's Christian association rooms last evening was a decided success, and deserves more lengthy notice, which we must defer on account of time and space. Capt. A. Pingstone arrived at Walla-walla on Thursday night from Colville, coming by canoe down the Columbia to Ainsworth in nine and a half days. He found the river avail able for stonmbonts for four hundred miles above Ainsworth provided fonr portages are made. -We are reliably informed that a peremptory order, signed by President Hayes and Clep. Sherman, has been received at forts Canby and Stevens strictly prohibiting from this date the sale of spirituous loquors at these and all other military posts. The order says that for the present the sale of malt liquors is not prohibited. James Smith was tried yesterday before Justice Fox for larceny. Smith uncermoniously appropriated to his own use a coat belonging to Mr. Thos. McFariand, and for doing so was fined twenty-five dollars and costs. Not being in funds to liquidate, Smith waa committed to jail. This same member of the numerous Smith family is the identical sneak thief who was convicted some time ago for stealing a canary bird aad cage from Mr. F. C. Korria. Tin Plate, Pic Tin, Etc. Geo. W. Hume keeps constantly on hand, and to arrive a full line of fish ermens and cannery supplies, at prices which defy competition. Parties wish ing groceries and those intending to run mess houses should inspect goods and obtain large discount from regular price. To Let. John Rogers has just received at the Central market a large invoice of coal oil, assorteds brand, and for sale at reduced rates. He also keeps a general assortment of groceries, liq uors, tobacco, cigars, fruits and vege tables of best quality, which he offers at small profit for cash. Frank Faber has removed in to Dr. Kinsey's building on Water street. On the road to the steamer dock from down town, before break fast, it will now be handy to drop in and get a cup of coffee. Since the Chinese started to brew "cheap San Francisco beer" there is little or no demand for that article any more. Call for the Columbia brewery beer, if you want something good. Gray's wood yard is now fitted up on the wharf foot of Benton street, and prepared to deliver wood to any part of the city sawed to any length, and full measure. Mr. John Rogers,, of the Central Market, has made arrangements to keep all the finest fresh fish, etc., in their season. If you want a good big oyster stew in style, call around to Tom Smiths, next door to P. H. Fox, Main street Astoria, Oregon. Open at all hours.
