J-so often and so quick Rainy. j that we have arranged this for our convenience. It saves putting up and tearing down so many lines. When you receive this paper, mark out lines that don't suit IVs handy. Mi. JoBeph Hume is pushuig for ward the erection of his new cannery below Kinney's as fast as he can pro cure the lumber necessary. If the material was at hand Joseph would give immediate employment to forty or fifty men. Tcssie, a little daughter of Mrs. S. N. Arrigoni, has been suffering the past week with poisoning of one hand, which it was supposed at first would result in the loss of it, but under care ful treatment of Dr. Kinney we are glad to note that she will recover with out injury. As an evidence of a prosperous matrimonial market, we axe informed that seven widows and six marri ageable young ladies reside in one block in Astoria. Our wag offers the following cenundrum: If so many re side in one block, how many reside in the city? Mr. Brooks Grant, who lias been engaged in the construction of a fish ing station for Hapgood fc Co., near the mouth of Skipanon, met with an accident on Friday, falling from the staging and breaking his loft collar bone. He is under treatmont of Dr. Jennings and is doing well. As it was impossible for E. C. Holden to close out last evening the whole line of silvorware and other goods consigned to him, the sale will be continued to-morrow at two o'clock p. M. In consequence of the perfor mance by the Astoria Dramatic associ ation for the benefit of Grace school, there will be no sale to-merrow evening. First Shipment. Under this heading die Oregonian of Friday says: "The large new boot and shoe fac tory of C. Leineuweber & Co., at As toria, has been in oporation since Monday, and yesterday the first pro duct of the factory, 1H0 cases of boots, were shipped to Akin, Selling & Co., of this cit3T. This new enter prise promises to become one of the great industries of the state." That the Oregonian should make such stupid blunders we are surprised. The Astoria boot and shoe factory has been in operation constantly since the first day f August, 1870, since which time Messrs. Lwnenwober fc Co. have made a number of large ship ments of boots and shoe.? to Port land, all of which has given entire satisfaction and ha e already gained for this factory a repuiaiion of turning out the best boots and shoes on this coast. This company are at the pres ent time engaged in filling an order for Akin, Selling & Co. for 1 ,400 cases; just think of that! This enter prise is now widely known throughout the on tire northwest. High, Water. Eat Oregonian. The late freshet has put the oldest settlers io recalling evonls of the past and occasions wherein the Umatilla rivor has before reached its late high water mark. Cnnnouth-John as sorts that about the time of the Whit man massacre (1847) the water was as high as this last time, but no higher. Dr. W. C. McKay, on the other hand, who is better authority no doubt, fixes this rise in Februar3T or March of 1851, but he sa33 the water did not exceed this flo:d, while Winnum- Snoot, chief of the Umafillas, says he has lived on the Umatilla for seventy years and neTer knew it to rise so high as it did last week. Speaking of hi"h water, leads U3 to chronicle the fact that the Columbia rose five feet in one night last week and the Snake twolve an unprecedented increase in the same length of time. The school money due Spokan county from Stevens county, 'amount ing to $1203 43 has been paid into the treasury of the latter and the al lotment to tlte districts has been made. The flouring mill at Pataha city has two runs of burrs with room for another, which will be added when needed. It has a grinding capacity of one hundred barrels in twenty-four hours. Last week Mr. Wallace of Haw ley, Wallace and company, Walla- walla, went to Dayton for the purpose of organizing the "First National bank of Dayton," with a capital of $50,000. Johtf Berry will be the cashier of the new bank. The Oregon city Enterprise says: "During the last rise Mr. L. Saldern had a boom of Iog3 washed away, in the Tualatin, containing about 200,000 feet, and worth $900. Messrs. Mat aud Ben Athey lost about 50,000 feet. Both these booms came down and tare out Mr. George Broughton's boom, at the mouth of that stream, causing him to loose his boom worth $150 and also about 40,000 feet of logs. Mr. Sald ern seems to be very unfortnaate, as one year ago. by a freshet, he lost a boom of logs, representing a whole year's work. The exhibit of silverware at Holden's auction rooms yesterday cer tainly exceeded anything of the kind over before produced in this city. The sales room was brilliantly lighted in the evening and the reflection of so many lights on the polished silver ware produced a dazzling effect The attendance at the sale was very large and the bidding spirited, many of the bidders, however, securing handsome bargains. Seats were provided for the ladies, and the wives of many of onr leading citizens were present and took a persoaal interest in the disposal of many of the elegant articles offered for sale. Card ofTlmnU. Mr: AJeorge DeUiis aud Mr. J. C.
