Oregon Improvement Company.
It is rumored in Portland that
all the vaht possessions of Air. Ben
"Holladay in Oregon are to be sold
to the Oregon Improvement com
pany. The departure of Mr. T. F.
Oakes, the manager, and Hon. J.
2sL Dolph, the resident attorney of
the Oregon Railway and Naviga
tion company, and the arrival at
San Francisco of Mr- George
"Weidler from the east, give the
report some credence. The prop
erty is extensive and is mostly
situated in Multnomah county, as
follews:
The Willamet steam Mills and
Lumbering company, capital stock
$100,000, divided into 1,000 shares.
The property consists of ten blocks
of land in the northern portion of
Portland, having a frontage on the
river of 1,000 feet, and on which
is erected the lumbering depot
known as AVeidlcrs mills. The
value of the property at the pres
ent time is put down at 250,000.
Oregon Transfer company, capital
stock 200,000, divided into 2,000
shares. Clarendon hotel property,
fronting 100 feet on North--first
street, and running west
200 feet, valued at $50,000.
The Holladay residence, corner
Stark and Third street, real prop
erty and personal effects valued
at $40,000. Oregon Real Estate
association, capital stock $1,000,
000, divided into 10,000 shares.
The property owned by this cor
poration includes a large tract of
land in Fast Portland, known as
Holladav's addition, and other
real estate in the state, and
is valued at about 500,000.
The "Willamet Real Estate associa
tion. The property of this incor
poration includes a number of town
sites along the lines of the Oregon
and Californa roads. The estimate
value of the property at present is
$30,000. And also the Portland
Street railwaj' company, capital
stock 200,000, divided into 2,000
shares. The Clatsop property,
consisting of 1,000 acres of land
on Clatsop beach, two large hotels,
three cottages, race track and
stables and a large number of live
stock. The sum of 75,000 was
spent improving this property.
The present value is estimated at
$20,000. Steamship California in
Sitka trade. Also in Portland,
three lots fronting on First street
corner of C, 50x100, and two lots
on Second street, vest of same,
-valued at 20,000. The Halsey
residence on Fourth street, ad
joining the Baptist church, valued
at 7,500. One lot on Fifth street
near Columbia, 50x100, valued at
2,500. Twelve blocks of land in
the Couch addition six fractional
and the remaining whole blocks.
One farm of 1,200 acres in Polk
county ten miles from Derry, part
ly under cultivation. Estimated
value, 15,000. One farm of 800
acres in Yamhill county, at St.
Joe. Estimated value, 3,500.
One farm of 700 acres in Washing-
-toa county near Cornelius. A
4ract of 34 acres of land near the
car shops on the east side road.
Valued at 12,000. If this sale is
consumated it will be the second
largest sale ever made in Oregon.
The sale of the Oregon Steam
Navigation company to the Oregon
Railway and Navigation company
k being the largest. The total
amount that will be received for
the property is 1,500,000.
The New Northwest has a.
.correspondent in New York who
writes as follews: "In the retire
jnent of John Kelly from the office
of comptroller, Samuel J. Tilden
has complete revenge at last.
When Tammany opposed his nomi
nation in 1S76, though afterwards
acquiescing in it, Tilden made a
-row that he would have satisfac
tion. This is Kellv's death blow
as a political boss, but his friends
say that he will sign numerous
aflrfieath- warrants yet."
Bosten Trade.
The Boston Advertiser, in its
annual review of the trade of that
city says: The past year has been
& prosperous one generally to those
who haTe confined themselves to
legitimate trade, and the various
industries which are prominent
here have been mainly satisfactory.
In the early part of the year the
advance in prices of Tarious com
modities led to more or less specu
lation and over-tradings but most of
those who were tempted to specula
tion had made money the previ
ous year and only suffered the loss
of what they had previously gain
ed, so that there were comparative
ly few failures. The exports of pro
visions and breadstuffs have moved
briskly, and the provision trade has
been eminently satisfactory. The
boot, shoe and hide and leather
interests are highly satisfactory,
and show a large increase over the
previous seasons business. The
drygoods trade has been profitable
and satisfactory, and the. clothiers
are closing up the seasons opera
tions much better than they antici
pated. Many of the woolen mills
have suffcrod during the fall and
winter for the lack of water, but
they will have the satisfaction of
closing out their joods at a better
price than they would if produc-'
tion had not been curtailed. The
wool trade h:us labored under tome;
disadvantages, but the coming year '
opens more favorably, and all the
prominent interests are in good
condition to share the prosperity
which has come from bountiful
crops and good markets.
The law to enlarge the rights of
married women, passed by the
Oregon assembly at its last ses
sion, seems to have favorably im
pressed Gov. Perkins of Califor
nia, lie recommends its adoption
in that state.
The Detroit Times thinks that
the best thing Canada can do vrith
its unfinished railroad is to bank
rupt itself by buildinp: it. and then
come into the United States to get
out of debt. As an independent
dominion, Canada is not a success.
Previous to the late election
Senator Davis of Illinois, though
professing to be an independent,
was accused of leaning about two
thirds over towards the democrats.
Since the election he has voted in
the senate on every important
measure with the republicans. It
is said the senator would like very
much to be reinstated on the Supreme-bench;
but of course his
change of front could not be influ
enced by any such conditions.
