Santa Fe, li- M.
'KT iu
Santa Fe, or the city of the holy
faith, was settled by the Spaniards
in the sixteenth century, and was
the capital of tin territory known
as New Mexico, long before 1GS0,
and was the seat of the civil and
military powor of the Spaniards.
The city occupies the site of sevei
al Indian pueblos, and here it was
that the power of the kingdom was
established, and that for centuries,
perhaps, before the Spaniards en
tered. But the Indian buildings
and monuments of their archi
tectual skill have long since and to
a great extent fallen to ruins.
There is an old palace, a portion
of which is .still standing here,
which is a quaint old building1, and
was the witness of stirring events
long before he landing -at Ply
mouth rock. It is estimated that
there is a population of about
10.000 in this place, and with the
exception of about three hundred
Americans and foreigners, is com
posed of Mexicans, descendants of
the original Spaniards, but who are
now mixed with the 1 ndians to such
an extent that little trace of the
great Spanish race can be found and
the identity of the race is almost
lost 1 Jccent years and the advent
of the railroad have made some
-changes in this old quaint city.
The buildings are constructed of
adobe or mud, and the changes
which have been made consist
principally in remodeling the old
one-story, tile-roofed adobe build
ing, by constructing a new front
and making an extension, which
add to the finish and appearance,
and which is American in style, j
Tie Americans have introduced
.vC.ne business activity into the
country, and they may be found
here in possession of immense
stocks of goods, and conducting a
large number of hotels, restaurants
and saloons, and all in the midst
of this old, sleep, lazy population,
who never have had but few cares
in life, and generations of these
mixed people have come and gone,
and there is but little evidence
upon the face of nature that they
have done either. The American
element has not infused any new
life into the character of those to
the manner born. The bustling
drivinir, energetic American does'uors. tobacco, cigars, fruits andvege-
c0o, to cl, i,0 ,;i;fitaUesf be?1 quality, which he offers
not seem to show the tranquility
or repose of the Mexican, whose
daily care is that of looking after
his little flocks in his pastoral life,
and from this lethargic state he
canuot be aroused by any example
set before him. Who can say that
this people are not happy and con
tented, and may it not be that
they are realizing more from life
than thoe who have their physical
'and mental -apacity constantly
.
upon a su-iin in me uusiness oi

In something we have written says
the editor of the Fanner, "we have an
indistinct recollection of having made
reference to a general disposition
among biys in their teens, as well as
boys of maturcr year3, to enlighten
and bless the world with their pro
found knowledge of the horse and his
history. Uur Ikkiks and newspapers
are full of this kind of literature, and
it varies in style from the production
of the child at school, commencing
with: The horse has four leg3 and a
tail; up to the eloquent tribute of the
scholar when he quotes from Jeb: That
his neck is clothed with thunder and
the glory of his nostrils is terrible.
He smefleth the battle afar off, the
thunder of the captains and the
shouting. Between these two ex-
tremes of the child at his first school
coniosition, and the professional
literature, we have every grade of pre
iii,iuiuiv, w

the whole subject. As we
approach the close of this nineteenth
century, we begin to look for some
thing better in this department of
knowledge from those who assume to
instruct." And it is to be found in
Kendalls Treatise on the horse, sent
by mail to any person for twenty-five
cents, postage paid. AppH to The

Syphon Study Lamp.
Hon. I. W. Case, of Astoria, in
placing the new Syphon study lamp
on the marker, would call the atten
tintion of the trade to some of its
merits. Its illuminating qualities are
not equalled by any study lamp in use.
It gives a steady, brilliant fight; is
free from unpleasant odorjdoes not drip
cither when burning or not burning;
easily lighted and trimmed, and is
without exception, the most conveni
ent lamp to fill ever made. Directions
accompanying each lamp. Call upon
Mr. Case and buy one. He sells them
at remarkable low rates.
