SHADOWS.
fWritton for Tub Astoria.
Sitting now I watch a shadow, darkly
pictured on the wall,
And unto my saddened memory, earlier
scenes it doth recall,
O ye days, ye days of childhood! when
a shadow could affright,
As it sometimes ran before me, some
times chased me in the flight.
Hastening to escape the shadows ; rush
ed I into man's estate.
But the shadows, ever faithful, ever on
my footsteps wait;
'Till methought that pain, or pleasure,
whensoever they befall.
"Wheresoever we may meet them, are
but shadows, one and all.
Hurriedly I reached the noonday, when
the sun just overhead
Chased away the darksome shadows ; for
a time they all had fled,
Then life's sun began to lower, slowly
sinking down to rest,
Xow, by shadows stretching longer,morc
than ever I'm oppressed.
Soon I'll meet another shadow, this the
Prince of shadows all,
And the king of earthly terrors, but, oh,
why should it appall ?
Por this awful, awful shadow, opes for
us the gates of light:
Ijeads us to a home eternal, where no
shadow is, or night.

of certain bonds to meet the outstanding
indebtedness of the city of! Astoria, and
providing the time and manner of pay
ing the same.

iv.c. l. That in order to provide for
the payment of the outstanding indebt
edness of the city of Astoiia, there be
and is hereby authorized to be issued
three hundred and thirty bonds in tli3
sum of fifty dollars eaieh. said bonds to
be payable on or before the 1st day of
July, 188H, each of said bonds to bear in
terest at the rate of ten per cent, per an
num, payable semi-annually.
Sec. 2. The bonds mentioned in the
forgoing section shall be numbered and
entered into the proper books in the
office of the Auditor, and shall contain a
provision pledging the faith of the city
to the full payment in United States
gokV coin, of Hie principal and interest
thereof, at the ofhee of the city Treas
urer at the tiipe or times the same mav
become duc upon the surrender of such
bond, or of the.coupon for interest, at
tached thereto.
Skct 3. To each of said bonds shall be
attached twenty pnper coupons bearing
the same number as the bond and rep
resenting the interest thereon for oach
consecutive half year from the 1st day
of July, 1H70, to the 1st day of July,.lf$9,
and payable on the dates therein named,
at the place and in the manner provided
by section two (2 of this Ordinance..
Sko.4. The bonds hereinbefore men
tioned shall be signed by the Mayor and
attested by the Auditor, and the Auditor
is hereby authorized to sign the coupons
attached thereto.
Seg.5. That the Committee on Ways
and.Mcans, of the Common Council of
the city of Astoria, are hereby author
ized and empowered to advertise for, re
ceive proposals and sell to the highest
niuucr, at such times and m such
amounts as they may deem advisable,
all or any portion of the bonds to be
issued under the provisions of- this Or
dinance. Provided that np bonds shall
be sold at less than par, interest off,
without the consent of the Common
Council.
Sec. (I. Upon making a-sale of any ofi
said bonds, the Committee on Ways and
Means shall notify the city Treasurer; of
the terms and conditions of said sale,
and upon receiving the purchase pric
for any of said bonds the Treasurer
shnll give the purchaser a receipt, which
said receipt shall be filed -with the Au
ditor, and the filing thereof shall be the
necessary authority to the Mayor and
Auditor to sign and,deJiver to the pur
chasers the requisite number of bonds.
