Hon. L W. Case, and Sir. Robb,
of this city, and Mr. Allen of Fort
JStevens, returned from Portland and
the sound yesterday.
Yesterday we observed a "stal
wart" striding along the streets bare
footed but he was a happy son of the
forest, as he wore a new oil-skin. How
that fellow's pleasure would be cov
eted by the stalwarts in Washington
thought we; not a care ruffles his
mind.
Old Smith has been arrested
for making the spurious 2 50 pieces
found upon his girl, and he 4 owns
up." If spirits told the old rascal to
do this, they must have been evil
spirits. We are confirmed now in
our belief that he was an old humbug
when at Astoria. All such, fellows
are curses to the cause -winch they

a. d. 1879. The citizens committee,
and the Sky-high-flyers Dufunny
Boys have spread out a bill of fare
equal to anything m the state. The
various committees on the part of the
citizens consist of the following
named well-known gentlemen:
Dr. Aug. C. Kinney on oration,
reader and chaplain.
Mr. P. W. McGrath on regatta.
Mr. L. D. Coflman on liberty car.
Mr. C. H. Stockton on place for ex
ercises and base ball.
Mr. B. S. Worsley secretary of the
committee, and committee on balloon
and fireworks, sack and foot races,
and to whom all communications must
be addressed in regard to the celebra
tion. Messrs. John Fox, P. W. McGrath,
C. H. Stockton, L D. Kant, B. ,,
Worsley, on finance
Sir. Carl Adler, treasurer of the
committee.
The managing committee consists of
Dr. Aug. C. Kinney, P. W. McGrath,
L. D. Coflman, 0. H. Stockton, and
B. S. Worsley.
The funny part of the celebration
is exclusively under the management
of I. M. Gross Mogul grand mar
shal, I. M. Kline Mogul, assistant
marshal, and I. M. A. Plotter, secre
tary of the Sky-high-fly Dufunny's.
The committee of arrangemeets for
the celebration, desire us state that

resent the Suites of the Union and one
young lady to represent the Goddess
of Liberty in the Liberty car, in the
procession, and request that ail wishing
to take part will please leave their
names with Mrs. Steers, immediately.
No bill, moneys for prizes, etc.,
will be paid out by any of the com
mittees on the da' of the celebration,
but the committees will give orders on
the managing committee, which will
be presented to the treasurer, on the
day following, when the same will be
paid.
A Grand Idea for the Ilunjjry.
A printing press has been imported to
appear in the sky-high-flyers dufunny
pocession in this city, on the 4th
of July, and will be at work as the
pocession moves, printing checks for
meals for the hungry multitude.

One of the guns which was used at
the siege of Paris, the famous Kupers,
will be hauled in procession in Astoria,
on the 4th. It was taken off the Sidi,
when she struck Sand island. This
time it will be charged with "nix-nax,"
for the children. Bless the little
ones; the world would he a blank
without them; but the Sky-high-flyer
Dufunny's are looking out for their
pleasure on next Friday. It will be
"Good Friday" for thein, sure!
We have had a conversation
with Capt. Hoyt concerning the ap
parent slight to Astorians on the
Puget sound excursion. We are
satisfied that the occurrence was una
voidable, in consequence of the fact
that the telegraph wires were down
and communication cut off the day
before. Capt. Hoyt informs ns that
General Spragne was present himself
at Kalama, and rendered the excur
sionists every possible accomodation,
in fact those going by the last train
were more comfortable and less
crowded than most of those going by
the first train.

from Mr. Runey, the chairman of the
committee on fire and water, concern
ing the actions of the two committees
the committee on fire and water, with
the acting chief engineer, Mr. Fcrchen,
as Mr. Trenchard, our chief engineer,
was absent from the city, and the com
mittee from Engine Company No. J,
where their report appears m full in the
communication as it was given in, as re
quested by the chairman of the com
mittee on fire and water. But did the
committee grant the request of No. 1 ?
No, but engaged a third-class, straight
framed engine, which could not be
turned on our sixteen-foot roadway.
Therefore the foreman, in presence of
Mr. John Ilahn, one of the committee
on fire and water, told Mr. Everson to
await with his order for the engine, as
it was not what we wanted. And Mr.
Halm and Mr. Wilhelm said: ''Get a
petition up, and we will raise the four
hundred dollars;' which I did, and Mr.
Ilahn started the petition by placing his
name on it and subscribing S23, and said
he would give more if needed (still he
is not a member of our company), and
from that the petition started, and in
less than four hours the four hundred
dollars was raised and the petition pre
sented to the chairman of the committee
on fire and water; but he would not ac
cept it and change the order, when such
men 'as G. W. llume, Captain George
Flavel. John Ilahn, A. YanDusen, Pe
ter Wilhelm. Jas. W. Welch, D. C. Ire
land, G. W. and W. W. and II. B. and C.
L.Parker, E. S. Larsen and many others
had signed for different sums : 'mt Mr.
John Ilahn and Mr. James W. Welch
had to give their guarantee for the pay
ment of the four hundred dollars, so
that the company could get what they
wanted, which was a second class double
plunger engine. But the paltry sum of
four hundred dollars was the only dif
erence between it and the third class
straight-framed single plunger engine:
yet still the chairman objected till the
guarantee was given and now you see
the result, as the citizens came to our re
lief. And as for the action of the fore
man, it was not that he cares to head
tne company after August if the com
pany see fit to give another the place,
but to do his duty to the company and
the citizens of the city by urging that
the engine be got here as soon as possi
ble. The chairman wanted to write to
the company, which would have taken
a month at least and then we would be
in just the same fix, as they would send
their agent: and the telegram was
paid for by the company, which I con
sider was thirty days gained. And
everybody knows well that No. Vs com
pany have alwajs worked under diffi
culties. WhyV Because they have
taken everything and said nothing. It
is time they were having some assist
ance, as they have stuoJc to the old con
demned hand engine for nine years,
which they have asked to have repaired
and a new suction given them time and
again, but could not get it; and still
they are blamed when the engine will
not work when there are some four or
five holes in the suction, which suck
more wind than water.
No one has censured the committee as
a committee; but one of the committee
has worked great hardships to both com
mittees and the members of the com

should be the last man to say anything,
but let the boys have all tuat they ask
for that is in reason. May-be he lias
forgotten the fire of June 2, 1877, but the
boys have not; and the foreman will
still urge that quick dispatch be had
in getting the engine here for service.
