Pay o Magazine "Writers
A writer in a Isew York maga
zine tliirtyfive years ago says:
"The history of the monthlies for
the last few 3Tears forms a chapter
by itself of American progress.
It is but a very short time since
the dollar a page of the North
American Review was considered
sufficient pay for articles by Ed
ward Everett. The oM New York
Mirror paid 6500 a year for 'Pen
cilling by the Way' (N. P. Willis),
the republication of which has paid
the author 5,000 1 think the
burst on authorland of Graham's
and Godey's liberal prices was like
sunrise without a dawn. They be
gan at once paying their principal
contributors at the rate of S12 a
page nearly thrice the amount
paid by English magazines to the
best writers, and paying it, too, on
the receipt of the mss., and not, as
in London, on the publication of
the article." These prices have
not been maintained. Six dollars
a page would now be an unusually
high price. The leading maga
zines, however, with the exception
of the Atlantic Monthly, pay on
the acceptance of mss., but in some
cases it is scarcely safe for a con
tributor to accept these terms, as
the amount of print it will make
may be underestimated. The
leading English magazines pa
from 4 to 7 50 a page. Black
wood and London Society are ex
ceptionally good pay. The Quar
terly and Edinburgh pay ordinary
contributors a guinea a page, but
sometimes raise these rates fifty
. per cent.
Makes too Much.
Max Strakosch, the operatic im
pressario, has just closed the sea
son in San Francisco. He told an
interviewer, a few days ago, that
he had received there as his share
of the receipts, under the contiact
with Maguire, the sum of 30,000.
He has been obliged, however, to
make large payments from this
sum to his artists; but after all, he
lias something left as the result of
his second California venture, not
withstanding the report that the
opera has been given at a loss.
Strakosch says the San Fran
cisco opera goers are capricious.
One night they will crowd the
house; the next night the seats
will be empty. Some imagine that
an impressario should give an opera
every night in the week. Max
admits that the prospect of seeing
Patti in this country is growing dim.
She will not come to America
for anything less than a fabulous
sum while her singing commands
so much money in Europe.
Moreover, the impressario said
he would not risk all he had in the
world on the venture, and take the
chance of failure. On this topic,
he said he once made a contract to
give Patti $200,000 for 100 nights
of opera in America, and she paid
50,000 to be released from the
engagement. "You see," he said,
"she will not come. She makes
too much money where she is."
Theaters and beer gardens
have been combined to such an
extent in Cincinnati that the the
ater business by itself is unprofit
able there. The prices of admis
sion to the gardens there are so
low as to defy competition by the
regular theaters, and the perform
ances are not of a low order, some
of the most popular dramatic stars
appearing at the larger establishments.
