The water of Fraser river has reached a height almost unprecedented, and is still very high. From Cariboo we learn that the town of Barkerville has been flooded. The high water brought down thousands of tons of tail 'tigs from the abandoned ; alluvial riiggins, and filled the houses and stores with gravel and ! slum, so that the buildings will have to be raised. And if the department can't afford to put brick buildings on each quarter section, it might at least put a frame building on each one hundred and sixty acre lot, before offering it to an outraged peo ple as a gift. Wells and irrigating ditches should also be constructed by the United States sappers and miners. What's the use for our govennent to offer its domains for homes, unless it holds out some inducement? Uncle Sam may be a good man, but there isn't much of the liberal Dick in his veins, or else he'd supply each land j hunter with a goverment mule. School Books Adopted. The controversy as to school bookSj which has heen going on for a consid erable time in our state, is ended by the adoption of the Independent Se ries, published by A. S. Barnes &Co., New York, Chicago and New Orleans. The series consists of six readers and a speller, by J. Madison Watson. It is not too much praise to say that the books are unsurpassed by any ever published. This series is the same as that in use for some time past m Washington territory. Stock will be supplied for the opening of schools in our state early in September. A. F Uunn, general agent, is now in the state, and will remain until he sees that the books are supplied. The house of A. S. Barnes & Co. is the largest and richest school book pub lishing house in the world, and its publications are all of the first order of excellence. The house of Cunning ham, Curtiss & Welch, Sansome street, San Francisco, is principal depot for the Pacific coast. Single copies of the Weekly Astori as .neatly done up, with stamps to pre-pay .postage affixed, for sale at this oifice. Send a copy to vour friends in other part f the world.
