Grant "Wants no Nonsense. Washington, June 13. Grant in a letter from Siam alludes to paragraphs he had seen in Ameri- . , r - i tions in honor of his return, and says that he is always sensible of approval of his fellow citizens; but any formal display which might . He wants Grant renominated, but will support al most anybody. In reply to the question whether he would go to San Francisco to meet Grant, he said, "No, I am not going, and do not think Grant's friends are the ones principally interested in this excursion. If it is intended for political effect, it is certainly very injudicious. 1 .should think that the purpose cf the excursion was to put money in . the pockets of those organizing it." Should Gen. Grant carry out his intentions of visiting Oregon and Mexico, the great excursion would turn up sliinly effective in a po litical sense. A man who returned a book be longing to another explained to the owner that lie did it hecause a fortune was written on his brow. If this rule is to hold, and everyone who has some one else's books iu possession is going to be rich, the New York Herald thinks America is about to enjoy an era of prosperity such as even a greenbacker never dreamed of, in his wildest moments. Portland not the Master any Xxmgcr Until the Mastery is Made. From the Daily Oregenian. This has been the only life of the communication between two great sections of country. It is a monopoly; and certainly it will not be less a monopoly should ., . , ,, , J, J Tj, , it pass into other hands. It has made money, too, for its owners; but the money has been used in improving and extending facilities cr, a , ,. mi i i of transportation. 11ns hue has , , , - u which never was surpassed by any similar line of transportation in the United States or elsewhare; and though it has formed the sole avenue of communication between two great divisions of country, both sections have prospered. Portland, as the center of a depot of the trade, has profited by it to an immense extent, and the interior country is developing through it into a populous and pro ductive region. What changes may take place under new director ship, should the line passinto other hands, it is impossible to forecast. The country, beyond doubt, will continue its career of progressive development, since the interests of the new owners will be identi cal in that-behalf-with-whatrtthoeei of the present owners have been. As to Portland, the question may be somewhat of another kind. Under new conditions that would be likely to result from change of ownership in a property that bears an important relation to the inter ests of the city and the country at large, as well as under the new and larger development that will 1 undoubtedly come as a result of great enterprises that cannot much lonirer be delayed, there Anil be new problems for the business men of this city to consider and solve. There will be a new situation of which they will not be masters till they make themselves master of it. MACNUS C. CROSBY. DEAI.KR IX Stoves, Tinware, and House Furnishing Goods.
