ASTORIA. OREGON ;
I. C. IRELAND Ertltor.
SATURDAY June 14, lSr 9.
Kordcuskjold.
Some people who are not given to
keeping up with the times, have been
charitable enough to think that The
Astoman falsified, with respect to the
reports of the circumnavigation of the
eastern continent by the daring ex
plorer Nordenskjold, "because they
have not seen it in any other paper?"
If such could be a little more appre
ciative, and give us that support which
is due to our efforts, we would to-day
be able to reproduce the whole facts,
maps, and all; showing the route fol
lowed by the Yega through the Arctic
seas, the precise points at which the
expedition wintered, and the route
'taken by the explorer for Europe,
We have the maps and the facts in
our office, but not the funds necessary
to reprint them. The Jeanette will
leave San Francisco for Behring straits
to-day. By the time she gets through
to the Norwegian seas perhaps some of
the "other papers" of Oregon will be
sufficiently awake to corroborate our
statements for the edification of doubt
ing ones.
Mechanics Institute Fair.
The fourteenth exhibition of the
San Erancisco Mechanics Institute
will open on Tuesday August 5th, and
close September Gth, 1879. The suc
cess and importance of these exhibi
tions is now well-known, the at
tendance during the past five years
averaging 300,000 for each fair, with
a constant increase. It is hoped that
our agriculturists, artizans, artists
and merchants will avail themselves
of this exhibition to place their goods
before the public, as no other oppor
tunity so advantageous as this can be
found, for cheap and efficient adver
tising. The great overland excursion of fif
teen or twenty thousand persons that
is coming from the eastern states to
meet Gen. Grant on his arrival in San
Erancisco will, no doubt, induce an
unusual number of the people of this
coast to visit the city at that time;
and it is certain that anything placed
on exhibition will be seen and ex
amined by many more than usual, and
make this occasion the time of their
visit, as the extra attractions then
offered will add much to their pleasure,
or profit.
No charge of any kind is made to
exhibitors for space or a rosonable
amount of power. Goods arriving be
fore the opening of the exhibition will
be stored free of charge. Blank ap
plications for space, a copy of the
rules and regulations, or any informa
tion desired, will be given or sent on
application to the secretary, Mr. J.
H. Culver, No. 27 Post street, San
Francisco.
A Powerful "Weapon-
The Boston Traveler, in speaking of
the death of William Lloyd Garrison,
Bays: "More than twenty-live years
ago a little boy, not yet in his teens,
took his first lesson in the 'art mys
tery' of printing from a gentleman in
middle life, who explained how the
"case" w:is arranged and why, and
practically exemplified the process of
"setting up" type. "This, my bo7,"
lie said in a serious tone, yet with a
smile, as he placed his hand on the
lever of an old fashioned Franklin
hand press, "is the most powerful
weapon known. In the hands of bad
men it is dangerous; in the hands of
good men it can work miracles. We
hope to abolish slavery with it." That
boy was the writer, that man was
William Lloyd Garrison."
The managers of the land com
pany now holding the fraudulent
grant of the Oregon Central military
road company are making another
effort in congress to obtain a valuable
gift of land without any compensation
whatever. This infamous swindle on
the people should never be consum
mated without an effort to prevent it,
we hope the press of Oregon will as
sist in its defeat. We need not again
write the history of this fraud.
Earthquakes Xaist Year.
Tl e earthquakes of the -world
in 1S7S amounted to 103, and
were most numerous in winter and
autumn, only 19 being numbered ,
m the spring and summer, -wmle
tuere "were ou m winter ana zo in
autumn. This number, however,
states Herr Fuchs, who actually
recorded these disturbances, in
cludes as units many periods in
which shocks occurred at intervals
for days and weeks. The most
destructive earthquake took place
on January 23d, in Terapaca,
South America, and another no
table disturbance occurred in San
Salvador. In Europe, one shock
on January 2Sth affected southern
England, and part of France.
Switzerland, the Black Forest, the
Tryol, Lisbon and Piedmont also
suffered at different times, while
the earthquakes on the shores of
the Bosphorus in April and May
were felt by the British fleet. The
lower Rhine earthquake, beginning
on August 29th, affected a region
of over 2,000 square miles. There
were 12 volcanic eruptions, an un
usually high number, and these
occurred at places far apart, and
mostly proceeded from like-known
volcanoes.
Dimensions of Heaven.
And he measured the city with the
reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The
length and breadth, and the height of it
are equal. Kev. xxi. 16.
Twelve thousand furlongs, 7,
920,000 feet, which being cubed,
o95,793,0SS,000,000,000,000 cubic
feet. Half qf this we will reserve
for the throne of God and the
court of heaven, and half the
balance for streets, leaving a re
mainder of 124,19S,272,000,000,
000,000 cubic feet. Divide this
by 4,000, the cubical feet in a
room sixteen feet square, and there
will be 30,321,842,750,000,000
rooms.
We will now suppose the world
alwas did and always will contain
990,000,000 inhabitants, and that
a generation lasts 39J years, mak
ing in all 2.970,000,000 every cen
tury, and that the world will stand
100,000yearsorl000centunes,mak
ing in all 2,970,000,000,000 inhabi
tants. Then suppose there were
one hundred wrorlds equal to this
in number of inhabitants and du
ration of years, making a total of
297,000,000,000,000 persons, and
there would be more than one
hundred rooms, sixteen feet square,
for each person.
Gold Coin to Europe.
The steamer Algeria from New
York for Liverpool June 5th, took
8250,000 in gold coin. This is
the largest shipment this year and
is unaccountable. Now that bond
sales have been practically closed,
it is not unlikely that there will
be more demand for the gold coin
in the United States treasury.
