.Our mystery is no longer a mystery.
The ahsence of the body to the skelton,
and non-appearance of head and
shoulders for so long spacers explained
on page G5C Johnson's natural history,
vol. ii, where an illustration is given
of the skelton of a large sea turtle.
What adds to the beauty of this
skeleton, however, is a fact no doubt
that it is from the very same turtle
left at the Occident on the arrival of
of the barken tine Jane A. Falkinburg
from Honolulu, and of the soup pre
pared from which we partook with
such hearty zest. Considering that we
enjoyed the amp we cannot complain
because the bones were played off
upon us as the bones of the veritable
missing link, so much talked of by the
disciples of Darwin.

Astoria, June 9, 1S79.
Editor Astokiax :
Will vou be kind enough to publish in your
valuable journal the following sketch or the
late John JJurUe aitd his daughter Emma,
and oblige a comrade, who has served with
him in the union army, during the war of the
rebellion, and participated in forty-six en
gagements with him, from the first Bull Hun
to the surrender at Appomattox.
John UurKe w:is born in the parish of
Odni, in the county of Tipperary, Ireland,
about the vcarls-JD. Landed in the city of
New Orleans. Louisiana, in 1850. Enlisted in
the United States army in 1SG1. YV:ls then
married, his wife being the widow of an
American soldier named Wallace, and was
the first American woman to enter the city
of Mexico after its surrender during the
Mexican war. Also followed the fortunes of
war with Mr. Burke. And I may here re
mark that en the morning of the first of
July, liWJ. while in oght of Malvern hill, and
going in that direction, a shell from a rebel
batten' bursted under the wagon cover, un
der which herself and the late Emma were
.seated, (Emma being tlien an infant). The
driver being wounded slightly, and more
scared than hurt, lied in horror from the
sjKit, leaving team, woman and child, and
w:ls never seen in his company after, but re
ported at fortress Monroe for medical treat
ment. Mrs. Burke then took the reins and
drove her six mule team into camp, under a
fire from the rebel batteries of .Mugredor,
and w:is received with a shout of triumph by
tne front of tne grand army ot tnc rotomac.
After the war w:is over Mrs. Burke gave up
the martial spirit to her redeemer, at Har
per's Ferrv, Va., and was buried at that
place with" military honors. John came to
Fort Stevens in 1865, in October of that year,
w hen that place was a wilderness, and toiled
with the balance of the veterans of his late
camiKiigns to make it one of the nicest posts
on the Pacific slope. Both the late Mr.
Burke and the writer served under its pres
ent commander. Major Throckmorton, one
of the bravest voting officers of the late war,
and who alwavs had the confidence of the
enlisted men, as well for his kind treat
ment of them as for his gallant bravery in
action; he having his father fighting against
him at the first Bull Bun, and commanding
the dreaded Black Horse Cavalry of Virginia,
while Burke was in thearmy he home
steaded the ph;ee where he met with his sad
end, and from the manner in which the peo
ple of Clatsop collected to pay their hist
tribute ot resect to his remains, and that of
his daughter, showed that he was as good a
citizen as he was brave as a soldier.

only lately arrived in this state from "Wash

liver up her spirit with that of the father, by
whom she was dearly loved. I have often
nursed her in her infancy, and never thought
it would lau lo my lot to ue cniei mourner, to
do the last kind act to their mortal remains.
May they rest in peace,
There is consolation even in misery, and
I shall for ever feel grateful to the people of
Clatsop, and the good Astorians. for the
