ASTORIA. OREGON:
I. C. IRELAND Editor.
TUESDAY June 10, 1R7 fl.
The Railroad Assured.
Messrs. Robb and Bowlby, the com
mittee appointed to make a canvas3 of
the city yesterday, in the interest of
the Astoria and Winncmucca Railroad
Company, secured ten thousand dollars
in subscriptions to the capital stock.
One gentleman in the city pledges
himself to subscribe ten thousand
dollars more, and several others whom
the committee have not been able to
meet, as yet, will probably double the
sum already taken in a few days.
This will be sufficient guarantee that
the work will be commenced, and
when it is once begun it will not stop,
until the railroad is built.
ANOTHER STEAMSHIP LINE.
Proposed Opposition ISotli on llic Ore
gon an J Southern California Routes.
A San Francisco dispatch of the 8th,
to the Oregonian, informs us that re
ports which have been in circulation
in commercial circles for some time
past, regarding the starting of an op
position line of steamers on this
coast have finally taken tangible
shape. It is said that articles of in
corporation will be filed in a few days
of a steamship" company, with G.000,
000 capital, to run a line of steamers
between San Francisco, Astoria and
Portland, and also a line to the San
Diego and other southern ports.
The steamers Rio Grande and Sar
atoga are reported as having been pur
chased hy agents of stockholders at
present in New York, and they will
be immediately sent out to run in
this line. Four small steamers will
be purchased and sent out, or may, if
satisfactory arragements can be made
to that effect, be built to run o.i the
southern route. The Bio Grande is
a steamer of 25G6 tons register.
The Saratoga is 2466 tons. The former
is at present employed in the New
York and Galveston trade, and the
latter between New York and Ha
vana. Political Pot-Boiling.
California is just now getting the
liveliest shake up she has ever had
politically. This is the result of the
constitutional election last month.
Kearney refuses to divide the pot. with
the Chronicle, and that journal goes
for him. The wire-pullers held a con
vention at Humboldt hall San Fran
cisco, on the night of the 5th, which
the Chronicle introduced the next day
under about forty head-lines. We

An effort is being made to cap
ture the Maiizineta for the 12th, and
put off the Shubrick upon the 13th
light-house district. We give the
Shubrick credit for being one of the
best in her days; we like Oapt. Kortz
and Ins officers, would be pleased to
have them stay in this district, but
the Manzinett was built upon an ap
propriation for this district; secured
by Oregon representation in congress,
and rightfully belongs here. Besides
this, the Shubrick has seen her best
days, and should be kept where it
would be convenient lo"make needed
repairs.

.AJV IMPETUS GIVEX
TO POLAR
EXPLORATIOXS.
One of the most remarkable
events of the past year is the cir
cumnavigation of the eastern con
tinent by Nordenskjold, the daring
Swedish explorer that portion of
his vtyyage yet to be accomplished,
via the Suez canal, beino- so sim
pie that its performance may be
safely anticipated. He left the
Swedish port of Gottenburg on
the 4th or last July, and by the
4th of August had skirted the
northern coast of Norway, Sweden
and Lapland, passed Nova Zem
bla and crossed the Kara sea. On
the 27th of August he reached the
mouth of the Lena river, thus, in
less than three months, demonstra
tinc: the feasabilitv of his enter
prise, for that point had been
frequently reached from the
Pacific ocean by former explorers.
Subsequently he reached ICellett
land, lying a considerable distance
to the southwest of Behring straits,
and was there blockaded by the
ice and compelled to remain for the
winter, on the 3d of Alav he enter
ed Behring straits, entirely beyond
the reach of danger, and cast
anchor until June 3d, on which
date he designed to sail into the
Pacific and set out for home br way
or Suez. In view of the innumer
able attempts to find a northeast
passage, his achievement is one of
the most extraordinary of the
century. His theory at the out
set was, that the entire passage
could be made in the summer
months. The practical results of
his success will be to open to profit
able commerce vast rejrions of
northern Russia and Sibera. De
tails are wanting, but enough is
known to warrant geographers
and scientists in anticipating a
large addition to semi-arctic lore.
Polar explorations will also be in
tensely stimulated. The Yacht
Jeanette at San Francisco, is being
rapidly equipped for a cruise to
the Arctic seas, and is expected to
sail on the 15th of the present
month.
