There is some improvement m
the jobbing trade owing to an in
crease in the demand for general
merchandise from interior points.
Business is however done on a
very conservative basis, credits are
more closelv scrutinized, and as far
as practical, a cash business is done.
The banks are especially cautious
in making loans, and this has con
siderable effect on general busi
ness. Coffee continues firm, and
prices tend upward. Receipts of
sugar have been very heavy, but
the maiket for refined grade is
without change. Metals, oil, case
goods and quicksilver are dull at
unchanged quotations. Rice is in
rood supply and stcailv, the ar-i

rivals of Hawaiian during the
week checking all tendency to ad
vance. Arrivals of deep water
vessels during1 the week have been
quite numerous, and there are stiU
a number due within the next few
days. The tea sale was well at
tended, and fair prices realized.
A company formed at Seattle,
to buiid a wagon road across he
Cascade mountains in the direction
of Kittitass, in Yakima county,
are soliciting 30,000 for the work.
The distance from Seattle, in King j
county, to Ellensburg, Yakima
county, is about 110 miles. The
Snoqualamie pass is said to pre
sent fewer obstacles to the con
struction of a wagon road than any
other route over the Cascade
mountains, connecting the Yakima
country with Puget sound, if we
except the Cowlitz pass, and of it 110
particular information has been
given to the public. It will be a
toll road.
