Omaha, May 3. Reports re
ceived by the Herald from the
southern part of the state, where
the storm of hist week was the
severest, show that although in a
few places there was slight damage
to crops, that on the whole the
rain did a very great amount of
good, and in some cases most
gratifying prospects of abundant
vield where before there had been
danger of doubt.

Washington, June 3. The
honse committee appropriation to
day agreed to report bills extend
ing the salaries of Representatives
Schleicher, of Texas, and Clark, of
Iowa, deceased, the same to be
paid to their respective widows.
The senate in executive session
to-day confirmed all the suspended
army nominations. Each and
every nomination sent to the sen
ate since the -Ath of March is now
confirmed.
The result of last night's meet
ing of democratic caucus commit
tees was the adoption of the pro
gramme sujrirested bv the sub-
committee. The democrats
both houses will consider the
port this afternoon.

Rome, June 3. A letter written
by the pope has been published
deploring the new civil marriage
law, and denying that the church
desires to encroach upon the pre
rogative of the state; but declaring
that purely civil marriages are des
titute of honest or sacred bonds.

river has overleaped its banks in
many places and large tracts of
land are under water. The dyking
operations have proved a partial
failure.

Everybody says these are hard
times. Does anyone remember a
time when people said, uwhat
erood, soft times these are I" Some
how or other good times are always
spoken of in past or in future
tense. They were, or are coming,
but are rarely here. Men say in
the spring, "there won't be much
doing till fall," and when
fall comes we hear that, "there
won't be much movement till after
the first of the year," and so the
"iively times" keep moving around
the circle, always a season in ad
vance of the present. The truth
is that to some portion of the popu
lation times are never good. Al
ways there are many people urgent
ly wanting money, always some
people wanting mone7 that they
are unwilling to squarely earn.
The prosperous and industrious
are silent, the idle and discon
tent are loud in their complaints.

Lower Chekalis.

On Monday afternoon and night,
we had the hardest rain of the past
twelve months. The Chehalis river
rose about eight feet in eighteen
hours. I left Mr. ShotwelPs with
three men, having a raft of 10,000
feet of lumber for my farm, near
Cedarville, and at the mouth of
Black river stove the raft against
a drift and broke it all to pieces.
Thodore Ulman and myself ran a
very narrow escape with our lives.
I jumped and caught hold of a
bush and pulled myself ashore,
and Mr. Ulman jumped on a log.
The lumber is all scattered along
the river for thirty miles. The
high water will injure a great deal
of grain. The farmers have put ;n
large crops this spring. James
Smith has sown ISO bushels of
wheat, and 75 of oats. Our country
is settling up quite fast. Two
families went down to Elma to-day;
and they told me there were six
families more at Centreville o-oinr
to settle in Chehalis county. We
will have one of the largest settle
ments in Washington territory,
and it is one of the best valleys in
it. Mr. A. J. Gibson will put up
a flouring mill near Cedarville, and
we want some one to come in and
put up a store, as we have to go to
the railroad or Olympia to do our
trading, a distance of 20 and 30
miles. In the country, we have two
good grist mills, and a third going
up this summer; and three stores,
one atElma, and two at Montesano.

Charles. The comparison is too
overwhelming. However, the
present Charles Dickens has hither
to carefully concealed his ability
from the public, if he possesses
any, and J hardly think that his
new book will add greatly to his
